I just saw this on GSBB, but Luongo was named Vancouvers captain.

I want to kiss goalie boy in the mouth and kick him in the nuts at the same time. He made a useful thread, but he goes on GSBB Confused

I don't think there have been any other goalie captains in the NHL. It's kind of a tough call, too. He can't be on the bench to help the team morale or whatever, but he's their best player and he's been with them for a while.

goalies cannot be captains in the nhl, it is a rule. there used to be goalie captains but the league changed that way back in the day because they didnt want the goalies skating all over the ice

Pretty much.

and FYI - this had already been posted in the Vancouver Canucks thread.

And Coops - basically like FS said, he's been with them for a while and is obviously a great leader to the team. You don't necessarily have to say much or be on the bench - he can lead by example. If the team doesn't see their goalie/captain get down after a bad goal or two, it can keep the team morale up, thus acting out his role as team captain. And they've got their assistant/alternate captains to talk to the refs if need be.

Taken from nhl.com:

"We might be a little outside of box here (naming Luongo captain), but there's only two things that, as captain, Roberto can't do and that's wear the 'C' on his jersey or take faceoffs," Vigneault said.

Apparently they missed the part where he can't argue calls with the refs either...

Someone else will be wearing the C, but it's just a kind gesture and to show he's the leader of the team.

They told TSN that nobody would wear the C.
