I'm not sure about... he may have been the starter... but he's had arguably the best defensive fowards in the league nearly every season, and Nic Lidstrom should have the Norris Trophy renamed after him.
Maybe if Osgood had carried the Sabres team through the playoffs on his back you could make an argument... under-rated... maybe.. does he belong in the discussion with the greats, absolutely not. |

I voted no, but I really wish I had voted yes just to throw off the count. |

No he is not and can not be thought of the best goalie of all time. Is he one of the most memorable, yes. Will he be remembered as one of the most interesting, yes, did he have a great career yes. Is he an elite NHL goalie, with out question he is part of that club too, but he is not the best ever, or even likely in that conversation, no. _________________

| I voted yes, but that is pretty much just my bias. Now that I think about it, probably not the best of all time, but still one of, if not my favorite. |

Okay, so now that were on the topic of who is the best goalie, care to explain who that is?
Terry Sawchuk could be one, but just remember the skaters weren't as good then as they are now.
Same applies to all the goalies of the olden days, some of them even cheated (Tony Esposito, he's still awesome though).
So I guess my point here is, I do not believe that the goalies then could stop the same shots the goalies of today ala Hasek could stop. Athletes are way better now then they were, equipment is better and everything is generally better.
1993–94 Buffalo Sabres NHL 58 30 20 6 3,358 109 1,552 7 1.95 .930
1994–95 Buffalo Sabres NHL 41 19 14 7 2416 85 1,221 5 2.11 .930
1995–96 Buffalo Sabres NHL 59 22 30 6 3,417 161 2,011 2 2.83 .920
1996–97 Buffalo Sabres NHL 67 37 20 10 4,037 153 2,177 5 2.27 .930
1997–98 Buffalo Sabres NHL 72 33 23 13 4,220 147 2,149 13 2.09 .932
1998–99 Buffalo Sabres NHL 64 30 18 14 3,817 119 1,877 9 1.87 .937
1999–2000 Buffalo Sabres NHL 35 15 11 6 2,066 76 937 3 2.21 .919
2000–01 Buffalo Sabres NHL 67 37 24 4 3,904 137 1,726 11 2.11 .921
2001–02 Detroit Red Wings NHL 65 41 15 8 3,872 140 1,654 5 2.17 .915
All of these years he was without a doubt, the best goalie in the league. He has the alltime highest save percentage and 389 wins to boot. _________________ http://www.youtube.com/user/JustVeejProductions

| Everything is relative. The goalies are better BECAUSE the skaters are better. Equipment isn't really better, it's just bigger in most all cases. The fact stills stands: Guys like Sawchuk, Plante or even Dryden were good back when their equipment was little more than two layers of felt stitched together. Their blockers, trappers, C/As, masks, pants and even skates were smaller thus giving the shooters more net to aim for and yet they were still good. They didn't play positionally because...hell...nobody figured that out yet. They were the most true athletes of any I can think of. Shots are no harder now than they were then and I still say that Hasek is not and never will be the best goalie ever. |

I'm sorry, but i'm pretty sure it wasn't his choice most of the time. Lets put it this way, if you were the coach, with the most high caliber goalie at the time, who says he felt a bit tired, what would you say "Oh, OK don't play" _________________

Yes. As a coach you should know when your goalies are over-worked and not going to perform. Look at Roloson, or even Kiprusoff. Stellar choice by Keenan to play him all those games and expect him to still have gas left for the playoffs. Pure genius.
They're coaches for a reason. You don't want to do your job correctly, feel free to send me the leftover millions you have lying around every year. |
