Martin Brodeur goes for elbow surgery right away. Expected out for 3-4 months. Tough break for him and the Devils.

I saw this just after noon on the TSN.ca website. I'm a Brodeur fan myself, so that really sucks that he's gone down with the injury. Huge blow to the Devils I'm thinking. I can't really see them riding the coattails of Weekes for the next four months.

Personally, I could see them making a bid for someone like Roloson or Khabibulin, and then dishing them off at the trade deadline after Brodeur is back in the lineup. I'm not sure what their cap situation is like, but if they've got the room, this is something I could see them doing.

Hopefully Brodeur makes a speedy recovery and can get back on the chase for the all-time win and shutout records.

That’s what the devils get for not having decent back up goalies. How could they not have seen this coming? They should have invested in a half decent goalie. Look at most teams in the NHL, if there #1 goes down; they usually have a back up that can handle mostly everything.

Weekes isn't worst case compared to what they could have. But who knows...The Bruins might be looking to trade Fernandez, he's better than Weekes, or he was, and he probably still has something left, he's around 34

Weekes isn't that bad. He used to be the starter for the Rangers and the Hurricanes. He just hasn't played much in the last couple years because Brodeur plays 78 games a season(which is stupid). He was spectacular the other night stopping 30 shots in a two nothing loss. But i definately agree that they are gonna have to get someone else to help carry the load. I don't know if it will be Khabby tho. Too expensive

The devils won't trade anyone untill they are in seriouse trouble. They will not trade for a high end goalie for half a season, then just dump him. That would be stupid. There not the bruins. Who go out and get a new goalie when they think that they are in trouble (Auld) For 4 games, then dump him after only using him for 4 games, and realising they wer'nt in real trouble and did'nt have to make that move. They will either

A) Stick with Weeks
B) Get a decent futur backup to fill in for broduer, then weeks will be out of there, and that goalie will be the new backup. Only if he proves to be of any use.
C) Pull up a goalie from the minor leagues to fill in for a few games.

The Bruins played Auld in 23 games and he was great when Thomas was struggling, it was actually a really good move Laughing

I would guess they would call up Frank Doyle for now to back up Weekes. They'll give Weekes a shot, but if he isn't doing well, they'll look for a new goalie

I don't get what people have against Weekes? Confused He may be a back-up his whole life, but he's still on of the best 60 goalies in the world.

man even osgood was kind of a backup for a long time before he got to net many games for the red wings (well at least not a full season player anyway). i think weekes has potential but he just has to get his shot and i think this is going to be the make or break of his career.

These 3-4 months could open doors for Weekes coming down the stretch to the deadline.
