The ugly...They're kind of ugly, except the 5000 graphic.

But they are very comfortable, adjustable, light weight. I used them for one practice and they were great.

The only reason i wasnt sold on the pads, were the look of the pad itself. Not the graphic, just the look. I don't it would suit my style..

I can agree with that, but I do think they look roughly similar to the Velo's personally. (sorry I couldn't get them facing the same way for all the challenged people who may read this, but it is inside v. inside for a fair comparison. There are slight variations in the wedges but I think overall they're similar in their construction. Large landing gear, thin face, pre-curve)

lol...you sir, are a stubborn a$$ . Don't worry, I'm Irish, and I can appreciate stubborn people. I like them, I think they look comfortable, lightweight, supportive and how in the hell can you beat all that for less then $900USD? Laughing

I've been debating about getting Smiths for my next set of pads, probably within a year or too. I hate the 5000 graphic, I would get the 2000 graphic for sure.

Hey, i was going to buy them last season. Laughing If i dont like the graphic of a pad, ill consider all white, and if i still dont like the look of the pad overall, i wont buy it. I like the graphic on the Vaughn 7700, and the overall look.

Ok, fair enough...but they have at least 50 custom graphics (http://smithhockey.com/sp5000gallery.htm) and the look of the pad as I showed is very very similar to the velo...so...I win. Actually I forgot where I was going with that.

From the pictures you’ve showed, those pads look nothing alike.

The Vaughn pads have:

Thicker thigh pad

Knee breaks on the side

1.5cm break between the knee stacks, and the leg slider piece

Thicker Boot Piece

Thigh wrap

Leg piece extends down to the ice, doesn’t stop at the break between front
pad, and boot

Smith Pads have:

Thin thigh piece

Smooth straight Knee breaks on side

No break between knee stacks and leg slider

Think Boot Piece

Thigh Board
Leg slider stops and beak between front pad, and boot

I'm so not picking that apart. But like I said, they are BASICALLY similar. They're both very thin, very light weight, very revolutionary pads in comparison to their competition. There are some nitpicky details that vary, but nothing that I can see that would compromise the integrity of the pad. And when It's a difference of $895 and $1399, I think I'll get over the fact that they don't have breaks here or they're thinner there or they don't have a great graphic for the face.

Just like with anything you wear on to the ice, you have to give it a chance.
If you give the Smiths a chance, you will like them. At first, I was fighting the pads and wanted to get into something else. But, after wearing them for a couple of more ice times, I started to really like them. Remember, not only are you getting a great pad for the $895 price tag, you are getting a "custom" set of pads for the $895. Smile

BTW, here is link to another forum with a more indepth out of the box review with pic's. Enjoy!! http://www.goaliestore.com/GoalieDoctorSmithPadsReview.php

My point exactly. I don't have any yet, but I'm willing to try them based on more then the way they look.
