That should cover most. What are you looking for exactly?

If you mean in terms of brands then I'll probably start looking at Vaughn since that's what I played with last time, but for now I'm researching and thought it might be useful to have a general size in mind for looking at availability and stuff.

Do you want a stiffer pad or a softer pad?
Squared up or not?
Flexible or block-like?
How do you like your leg channel?

etc.

If you are looking at Vaughn, you are basically stuck between the V2, V3, or Epic. The V4/7700 will be coming out as a limited edition pad to their bigger retail outlets.

The V2 is soft, a little more rounded and tapered at the thigh, super flexy (2 break points at the knee), and a little cluttered in the leg channel (Vaughn uses a leg channel - two flaps to cradle the leg).

The V3 is a little stiffer (they use harder foam on the outside rolls), squared up at the thigh, still pretty flexy (again 2 break points at the knee), and they widened out the leg channel about 2" each side for a bit more freedom.

The Epic is going to be pretty stiff (like an RBK) and square, and it will have a leg channel like the V2 (again two flaps to cradle the leg, but they use a softer, grippier material called nash).

The V4 I am not sure of yet, nobody except a select few know what this pad will be like. It will have the Price graphic though.

Personally, I am a fan of the V3, although I like my Smiths a lot more than any pad on the list (or any pad available, period). I am pretty picky with my leg pads, as that is what makes contact with the ice, and if they don't fit right for whatever reason, you will feel it and it will affect your game.

As far as aspects like that are concerned I'm not really sure. Though I played for a while, it has been such a long time that I don't remember what style I played /didn't have a style/my body has changed so much that it's hard to use those as indicators of what I'm looking for. I'm pretty much a new goalie again. But just based on what you say, I like the sound of a softer pad with room in the leg channel and something that squares at the thigh. I have been looking at the V3 mostly, though admittedly that is only based on the pad's graphic design so far Embarassed. Thanks a lot for all your help. This is what I needed; I haven't looked at any of this stuff in so long I don't know what I should be looking at to pick a pad for me.

Gear has changed a lot the last few years. You are probably looking in the right direction. The V2/V3 has a similar type of feel to older generations of pads. May also want to look at some of the offerings from Brian's, they are still making some traditionally built pads.

Hey mx42, I've got another brief question if you've got the time. Given that my ATK is a little over 18 and I'm 6'2" do you think a pair of Vaughn 35+1 would be too small? You recommended 36 before, but I'm just curious. Thanks Smile

My ATK is 18.5" and I'm 6'1" and mx said I should be in a set of 37"+1 Vaughns...don't know if that helps any, but I remember he said that the foam Vaughn uses in it's pads tends to settle a little bit so you want to go an inch above what you would with other pads. Since I deeply respect mx's knowledge I would most definitely follow whatever advice he gives.

Leg pads:
Take a tape measure.
Sit down with your leg at a 90 degree angle with the floor.
Start the tape measure at the middle of your ankle bone.
Bring it up to the middle of your knee cap along the inside of your leg.
Give me this measurement and I will be able to fit you in any pad.
Plus sizing:

When a pad is noted as "+" sized, it means there are extra inches on the thigh rise (top of the pad above the knee) to help with 5-hole closure.

My ATK is 14" and I'm 5'6"
My most previous pads were 29" (previous brands I've owned are Cooper, MCM Vic, and Eddy). I know things are different these days so what do you recommend???

What size do you think would fit best for an ATK of 18.5? I currently have Itech 12.8s in 34+1, I know that these are insanely samll but I've sorta adapted to them but still take shots that hit the inside of my knee

Id say 36+X RBK, or 36.5-37+X other brands

So I've noticed that 32-33" pads are fairly uncommon. I went to the local sport store, and they have tons of 27" - 31"... and then they jump right into 34" on

Maybe I'm just at a really crappy height, because they had a set of Vaughns... black/black/red Crying or Very sad but 31"
