V3s will be slightly stiffer than the V2s because they use higher density foam in the vertical roll.

If you order a V3 with a single upper break, you may find the stiffness you need. The breaks are still there inside the pad.

MX42,

I'm looking into picking up some RBK 6K pads in the next little bit here, and I'm kind of torn as to what size to get.

I took the measurement from ankle to knee, and I'm getting around the 19" range. I'm around 6'1" - 6'2" if it makes a difference.

My current pads are Itech Profile 4.8 (and are fairly old) -- and are 32" -- they barely reach above my knee, so I've got a sneaking suspicion that the 32" measurement of those pads includes the boot.

I went to a store to get an idea of the size of pad -- I went in thinking 36" based on my current pads, but a 34" pad seemed quite large. Just to get an idea, I measured 36" from the floor yesterday, and that almost reached my waist...

I know a lot of this comes down to personal preference, but any advice you could offer would be much appreciated.

8210:

Glad you posted. Yours seems like a special case. Let me go through step by step.

A 19" ATK will put you in a 37" RBK pad.

Since you are looking at the 6K, I believe the only solution for you at this point PURELY BY THE NUMBERS is the 36".

BUT given the rest of your info, it seems as if you have a long shin, but a short femur (thigh bone); you may be a special case. Let me get some more information.

First of all, when you tried the 34", did you try with skates on? Pants?
(These two items drastically alter the fit.)

Where did your knee hit while sitting? While down in the butterfly?
(Your knee should be right in the middle of the knee cradle.)

Finally, how do you wear your pads? Loose? Tight? How much slack at the toe laces?
(The looser you wear your pads, the bigger you can afford to go, particularly with toe lace slack.)

PS: All pad measurements should include the boot. The only difference is, each manufacturer uses a different formula to measure them, hence the discrepancy between MFGs.

MX42,

Thanks for your reply.

Truth be told, when I grabbed the 34" 6K, I only held it over my leg in the store -- no skates, no goal pants. I never strapped the pad on, although, I guess in retrospect, I should have to get a better idea of where it sat on me.

With the pads I've got right now, I wear them fairly tight (aside from the top straps), but that's mostly due to the age of them. There is only a thin pad on the inside of the calf, so there's nothing really to cradle the leg for going into the butterfly with a loosely strapped pad. As for the toe tie, I don't tie it on the ones I've got now -- partly because I wasn't sure on a proper tying technique until recently and partly because the pads are just all-in-all too small for me.

So for trying the pads on, would you suggest bringing skates to the store to try on with the pads? I guess that way, I'd get an idea of where the knee cradle is going to sit on my leg. I tried to sort of guess that with the pads I looked at in store, but it was tough to gauge where exactly my skate would sit.

Hopefully this gives you a little more information to provide some more advice. I look forward to it.

Yes, try them on with your skates on. It will give you the best idea for fit.

Well, I went down to a store, and found one that actually had the 36" pads in stock. I tried both the 34" and the 36", and the 36" won.

I noticed that when they stand on the floor side-by-side, that there really isn't a big height difference -- so I guess most of the difference is in the boot of the pad.

Either way, the 36" pad fit so perfect it couldn't have been any better had it been made for me. Now I just actually have to order mine. I'll have to live one more game with my old pads, but I think I'll manage...

For leg pads its really hard to find your size because some people like smaller pads and some people like pads too big, but really what you do is measure from ankle to knee.

Skates are very personal. Generally fit 1.5 sizes down from your shoe size (but shoe sizes are different and people wear them to differing fits - ie bigger for comfort) but then come in different widths.

You will have to try them on yourself to get the best fit.

35 RBK
36 Vaughn, Itech
35 Brian's
35 Nike Bauer

That should cover most. What are you looking for exactly?
