I'm 48 yrs. old and am looking to buy a new and probably last pair of pads. I play in a fairly intense rec league and play approx. 50 games/year. Looking for light weight with good knee protection as both knees have had multiple surgeries. Would like to keep the cost under $1000 if possible. Any help or suggestions much appreciated.

What style of goalie are you?
IMO, there are many good quality pads out there today. Far more price options than say even 8-10 years ago.
My opinion would be to get a good Senior level pad. If you are a hybrid style, check out the Bauer RX8, or the Vaughn 7405's. If you are a fly goalie, check out the Bauer One80's or the Reebok Revoke 9000's. You should be able to get a great pair of pads for around $700.

Also, doesn't hurt to check out used equipment. I've been playing for about 12 years and have yet to purchase a brand new set of equipment. You will most likely be able to find a matching set of Pro gear at a fraction of the original cost, and this is the time of year to buy as its mid season and stores are looking to liquidate whatever. I was offered a brand new pair of Rbk Xpulse pro pads for $650 2 weeks ago because they were the retro style but he had no matching blocker or trapper. Unfortunately they were too big. And if you do go used and find anything you like, flashing the cash will often get a lower price and drop the tax.
