Hey all.

Looking for some advice and guidance on which pads would be best for a 5'7" atk 16" and 185 pounds rugby player who is looking to become a new Goalie hahaha

I dont want to spend lots of cash obviously. But willing to spend enough on a pair of pads that will last me a more than a few season of occasional/regular Rec league use. Thinking around $350 including shipping to BC or less for 32" / 33" pads.

Looking at the moment at a few options.

32" Vaughn V2 or V3
32" Simmons 993 and above
32" Itech 11.8 and above
32" Brian's DX2's

Any thoughts or comments would be welcomed.

Thanks

Vaughn V3s would be good - except they're way more than 350$ shipped. You'd be looking at around 1100$ minimum for the pads.
The only Vaughn V2s I found were the vintage style on goaliemonkey.com and even those were 1100$

Simmons is a great choice, but 700$ without taxes and shipping

Itech 11.8 I couldn't find any pads for them, although I only did a quick google search.

Brian's DX2s Pro Intermediates are 1000$

You've chosen to go for the best pads, which will definitely last a while - but for your budget, they're WAY over. You're either going to have to settle for a lower quality, or fork out more money. You can't be cheap and expect the best quality.

Here's some decent ones I found on ebay for you to have a look at:

Hey Puck stopper.
Thanks for the reply. But the prices you are quoting are for brand new. Im looking for used, hence why i know the price range of each of the pads mentioned that i have found. They are all under the $350, although some are not including shipping.

Cheers

If you are simply looking to break into the sport any of those pads will do the trick.

The 993 leg pads from Simmons I believe had some rotational issues that were addressed in the 994 so maybe keep that in mind.

The V2 and V3 pads along with the DX2s are obviously a solid pro level pad.

I dont know much about the 11.8's but my understanding of them is to be a decent pad, with the 12.8 being their top of the line??

4.8 - Xwings - Crap

7.8 - Xwings - Minimum level of quality

12.8 - Xwings - What you really should be saving your pennies for...

---

11.8 is reserved for their XFactor set, which is 12", and not of the best quality from what I've seen. Made in China.

Where the hell are you finding V3 pads for under 350$??? I'd be all over them. My current ones I bought used (1 year) for 750$

I think they were V3 7200's or somethign like that. Dude was in Texas was sellign them, but due to complications the deal fell trough, so now on the look again!

I have looked on Kajji and a few other places, and found all the pads I mentioned for under $350. I even found one guy selling a custom V2 set with matching blocker and glove for $300 but was already sold.

If ya look you will find, or go cross eyed and see things that aren't there!! lol

Cheers

Thanks for the Info on the 993's and 994's. I havent got a clue what will suit me till I get on the ice and try some out, shame there is no place you can try befor eyou buy kinda thing! that way you can get the feel etc. Most of the stores I have been to only carry one or two pads, and mostly RBK or NIKE so have to find the more speciality stores in the city to find something.

As I mentioned before the 993 had complaints of rotation problems and a few minor things... good pads but the 994s are said to be a lot better.

When it comes to Vaughn full numbers like 7000 are Sr. sizing, and anything in between like 7040 or 7070 is a intermediate or junior sizing.

If you are trying to find out what a good deal is surf the web. Look at classified on GSBB, look at eBay or simply google for sales in Kijiji or Craigs. See what other people are charging for the same pads in various stages of condition and see how it compares to the ones you are thinking of buying.

Wow, Hawks, those are a good find! Yeah, Scottish won't fit into those though!

Scottish, try on some 34"s, let me know how they feel. If you fit into them, I have some V2s with enough life left in 'em for extremely cheap! Like in the $150.00 range.

I'd almost consider those, but if they're a vaughn remake, they won't fit me. Wink

Honestly, the knee is only about an inch shorter than my 36" Brian's pads. They do run a bit big...

I'm just not putting them officially up for sale, because every year, a city by me makes an outdoor rink, and I'd rather not risk my Brian's on outside ice, so I'll strap on the V2s.

They have been amazing pads for me though. Incredibly durable!
