I'm thinking about changing the base color of my mask. Some of you all remember me asking about the decals and clear coat. Right now the mask is black. I'm thinking about making it navy blue or silver. Not sure if I'm going to do it myself or have it done. Here's a few questions.
I know I need to strip off the paint that's on there. Do I need to put primer on before I paint it? What kind of paint works best? Can I use rust-o-leum without damaging the mask? Someone mentioed Imron clear coat, can Imron paint be used too? Any kid of paint I SHOULD NOT use? (i.e. acryllics. stuff lie that?) I'm planning to contact Pro-Masque and see what they recommend, but in case they just tell me to send it to them to paint, I'd like some outside info. Thanks again, Michael

Getting your mask painted one solid color is usually pretty inexpensive and you have a far better chance of getting it done right. Mask painting isn't really one of those easy DIY jobs, there's a lot that goes into it to make sure it's done right. I'd suggest asking body shops and doing a quick google search for places that can do it before thinking about doing it yourself.

mask painting one color is easy....the result you get from it will be based on your attention to detail in the prepartions.
Use duplicolor paints and primer and youll be fine. take your time, thin light coats, sanding between, then a coat of clear and your set.

Graphics are another story.

Nope, never even attempted it before. Here's the reply I got from Matt at Pro-Masque:
Quote:
Unless you are a painter, I do Not recommend it. I charge just $125 for single color re-paint. There is urethane clear and base on there now, enamel, lacquer etc will blister it all up….Very badly. NO rustoleum……..Also, you’ll never be able to sand all the old paint off. You can try, but if you go through the very thin 3 mils of gelcoat on the mask, you’ll have a million fiberglass pinholes to deal with, an absolute nightmare.

Dupont with epoxy primer first, basecoat, then clear would work, if prepped properly, but you need the knowledge, proper guns, and fresh air system and ventilation to apply. The isocyanides in that paint will kill you if you inhale too much, simple dust masks will not work.. Just not as simple to do properly as it sounds, sorry.

I think I'm just going to wait until I get my taxes back and get it done right rather than take a chance on screwing it up.
Thanks to everyone for their input.

Mask painting is definatly something I would leave up to an experienced painter. I have been paintng masks and helmets for 11 years now and learned a lot the hard way. By the time you get the equipment an materials to do it right, it would be cheaper to let an experience painter do it for you, unless you plan on making a hobby out of this.

IIRC, Acme Art will do a single-color job for $35. He's on the GLBB, maybe elsewhere as well.
