Recently I discovered that my Itech 1400 mask is called a Widowmaker, or some such. That sucks. I'm not nearly arrogant, or stupid, enough to argue with as many points as I've seen to this.

My glove also, I discovered a bit late (though I knew it wasn't PRO level) is a street hockey glove (catcher). The blocker sucks in the same way.

I'm dying on budget, and I know I probably shouldn't be playing if thats my situation, but I absolutely love this position, and I'm not going anywhere. I'm trying to figure out what sorts of gear I need to get.

In terms of gear, flashiness obviously isn't a concern. I just want something that will protect me well enough, and last long enough, that its worth it. What sort of gear am I looking at?

A goaltender at the rink told me "Go Hackva, Go Hackva" for a mask, but *****, they're 270+ at the Simmons site, and its killing me.

Any suggestions? If I'm just screwed, just tell me that even, I just need to know Smile

Add - Reason I need higher quality gear? I took a slapshot to the head from a Minor league player, and I learned REALLY quickly what landing on your back and seeing stars meant.

Minor league players (from Calgary Flames' minor league team) come and play pick up every once in a while, and when they do, I need to be protected Smile

Heres hoping...

I had an Itech first off and I've said it here as well as to the many goalkeepers I have seen playing locally with Itechs: the first puck to the head was a deflection yet still had enough of an effect to make me doubt the mask. The second hit was full on and my ears were ringing for a week, not the mention the nasty migraine I had.

Many will tell you the mask is the most important item you buy, especially if you're playing at a level where you will be getting serious high shots. Unfortunately, better masks cost more money. I considered the Hackva and then instead went with a Promasque custom job. Reasoning: if I'm going to dish out 300-400 dollars for a mask, I might as well dish out some more and get one suiting my own preferences, made to fit and not off-the-shelf.

A couple hundred bucks.

Basically, I'm sitting around 350 for the whole kit and kaboodle. If that means I can only get a mask, I'm willing to do so (and deal with the broken hands Laughing ) I don't want to knock my head off. We only got one head, and two hands, right? Some famous guy probably already said that Smile

Check out clearance stuff on hockey monkey or hockey giant websites, particularly for a trapper on the cheap.

If you dont mind used gear hit up ebay, craigs, kijiji, etc.

There is a ton of gear on there. I bought a set of pro level gloves (catch and blocker) for $200 CAN used for half a season.

Deals happen if you have they eye for them. Only thing is I spent about a month and a half searching out that glove deal because I had a slowly growing budget and time to kill.

Either way, point is the same, lots of gear on the market.

Hit up GSBBs gear section and look at used masks or gloves there.

Check out this Hackva at the GSBB Classifieds. Going for $250 if it fits you (size Medium) and then you have $100 or so to go with for a second-hand blocker or glove.

Blow your money on a new helmet, but don't leave out the hands... if you're playing with street hockey gear, something's not right.

Hell, I'll send you my old 5K blocker for the shipping costs if you're that stuck. Not the greatest, but certainly better than street gear...

Wow, you guys are MORE than helpful, thank you!

I actually might take you up on that. I'm speaking with Returning 2 My Net (without spaces) via PM, as he is making me a great deal on a glove set, but if something happens, I'll definitely hit you up!

You know something is bad when you feel shots to your BLOCKER on the back of your hand!

Still haven't found a helmet, but what I'm doing is looking at possibly waiting until I can scrounge together a bit more for my helmet, and just buy new. From what everybody has said so far, going new on a helmet is the only way to know it'll be just right, and frankly, seeing as how I'm applying to medical school in 2 years, I can't chance losing my head to an errant shot, haha.

Thank you again, I'll update thread tomorrow night with whether or not I managed to get the glove deal through...

No problem. I'd hate to see another goalie get taken out because of improper equipment.

Just pm me and I can figure out shipping costs for you. Of course, wouldn't ship it out for about 2 weeks - we just ordered my sister a new blocker, and in the meantime she's been using my old one.

I'd say if you can afford it - take up R2MNs set. Much better quality than mine.

That was actually one of the first places I looked, but without considering used equipment, there is no way I could afford both gloves for the price, however R2MN helped me out in a BIG way, and he's shipping them out today.

Thank you all for your fantastic help, and pointers. Truly a helpful group of forum posters!

Now I'm off to work to save enough money for a helmet! Razz

I know this is an old thread, but I'll toss my .02 worth in on it. 1 thing to consider when looking at where to spend the money for protection, bones heal- brain cells die for good. When I'm not in goal, I'm a nurse in orthopedics. I see people in and out all the time with a broken bone that gets set, the bone regenerates and the bone is mended. sometimes they get a little hardware as a souvenier, but they go through life with it, no problem. On the other hand, a serious shot to the head can kill brain cells. Once brain cells (or nerve cells if you prefer) die, that's it- they're gone for good. Kill enough of them, and you won't have enough function left to pick up a fork.
