One there are no fights in AAA, esp those that are "fights" you wont see fight till Jrs even there they are getting scarce and more closely related to scuffles than fights.
Two if your asking how, your not fighter, so why worry.

At least in the leagues below the OHL here, if you fight, you get suspended. Why bother? You won't pursue your career by fighting. Scouts are looking for goalies who can stop pucks, not beat the shit out of other kids.

as a goalie in this day and age you will not get pressured into a fight.
Seems you are honestly worried about it, go hit a boxing gym and learn.

I second R2Mn. In my 10 years as a goalie, i have never been in 1 fight even playing junior hockey. But if you are seriously concerned about being in a fight go learn some basic boxing skills.

There were plenty of fights amongst the forwards during my games but never any between the goalies.

Just like stated early the frequency of goalie fights now is significantly lower than it had been in say the early 90's.

So relax and just stop the puck.

I wasn't telling you whether there was fighting in your league or not. I was stating what I knew based on the leagues around here, and proving a point about how you would be wasting your "career" by fighting in the younger leagues. If you don't want to fight, skate away. The refs won't let a guy beat the crap out of you if they can see you're not interested. Let the other idiot get suspended.

I agree with R2Mn, you dont need to fight, I had only one fight against an other goalie in my career, just against a couple forwards (and I stared all of them btw)
First I have to say: Never fight a forward! Hes got all the momentum on his side, hes more agile than you, and is mostly more experienced in a hockey fight.
Second: Of course some boxing skills would help, but a hockey fight is completly different. You cant avoid to get hit, except you one-punch him. And this wont happen, because you are not a fighter, right?Blocking is almost impossible.
The most important thing in a hockey fight for a goalie is to keep your balance, and for that you need strong legs and a strong hip. Grab his jersey, so that you can keep him in your punching reach. if your opponent is bigger and taller than you, forget the "pull his jersey over his head"thing.
You wont succeed and he will beat the shit out of you while trying.
All I would recommend you when you cant avoid a fight, keep him on distance, stay on your feed, and wait for the ref to break the fight up. You are not a fighter, so dont do it.

Ive been in two fights... both I started.

The was a guy crowded my crease, I chopped his leg, they scored and he gave me a shot to the head after the goal... I went off.

The second time a kid came in and after the whistle cross-checked my guy hard in the back... again, I went off.

Ive never been pressured into fighting, hockey isnt some street gang where you have to fight your way into acceptance. As has been mentioned, every league I have played in fights = suspensions. If you really want to drop the gloves, become a skater and make juniors or some other level of semi-pro to pro hockey where its legal.

woa...interesting thread. 23 years in the nets from 1971 to 1994 (missed 83-84 b/c of shoulder surgery) so I played during the time (70s to mid 80s) when fighting was "acceptable". only had 2 throughout the 23 years and one was with a good friend during a practice where we both got a little excited when he axed me across the chest trying to swat a rebound. in college we had a "scrap drill" which was more about strength and balance than about actual fighting...by that time, it was already banned in college.

you dont need to know how to fight. you're already pretty tough just to stand in the crease. ignore the nonsense and concentrate on stopping pucks. even Billy Smith let that crap go eventually and pyscho crap just about cost Emery his career.

I've played for about 12 years now and been in 2 fights. One was in a shinny match where some roid raging retard from Manitoba was back in the US because...he got suspended for beating the crap out of his trainer for no reason. The other was in a tournament where both teams went at it and when I saw the other goalie rush out to start fighting I was more than happy to meet him.

The bottom line is fighting just isn't necessary and you can almost if not always just avoid it by staying in you crease, or skating to the bench. Goalies do not need to nor should they ever get into fights. You can replace a D or winger pretty easily...replacing the only goalie is a good deal harder.

I was a defenceman during my competitive days of hockey and was in a few fights. My tips for you are first off get yourself a good strong stance and keep as balanced as possible. If you are off balance you are toast. Don't reach out to grab him first; let him come towards you and hit him as he does. Grab his jersey near the collar( or grab the collar if you can). To help avoid being hit try to keep the elbow of your arm holding his jersey up. His punches will glance off of your arm and not hurt if they connect. If you are getting hit you can duck your head into your arm.
The best way to avoid fights are to keep clear of any scrums during fights. The other goalie won't come down to fight you if you don't give him a reason to. Basically if youkeep away from the trouble you won't get into any trouble.

He wouldnt be wasting his career by getting suspended for a few games..besides, scouts never even go to a or aa games, atleast not in minor midget. If the other goalie wants to fight you, go for it.

And if there is a scrap big enough to get the goalies involved, the linesmen will be too busy working to get everyone else seperated. And refs rarely break up fights, thats what the lines are paid for. 99% goalie fights are just for fun, and they are going to be paying more attention to the players who are completely defenseless before going after the goalies.

I fail to see how this makes any sense in the slightest... If you're going to fight for fun, do it off the ice so you're not missing hockey. Or maybe I'm the only one who would rather play than "fake" fight?

Do it off the ice and go to jail? Not fun
