I've seen a ton of posts on here about where to suck it up and spend the big bucks and where to cut costs. I thought I'd give my .02 worth from my point of view. First let me say than when I'm not stopping pucks, I'm a nurse in orthopedics, so I've seen my share of broken bones (quite litereally, I work in surgery some and have SEEN broken bones). One thing I've learned, broken bones heal. Unless they are completely shattered, or there is some other underlying medical condition, after a couple of months, most people are completely healed and can do whatever they were doing before- including playing hockey. There are of course some exceptions, but if your talking about a cracked bone in the hand from a cheap glove, or a busted rib from a low end C/A protector, most likely- it'll heal.
Now for the brain- The brain is made up of nerve cells. Nerve cells do NOT regenerate. Once they're dead, they're dead. There have been a few cases I've read about of limited nerve regeneration, but they're extremely rare. Not what you want to bet the ranch on.
So whats the point? If your on a limited budget, spend the extra bucks and get a GOOD, WELL made mask that's going to pretect your squash, then shop around for bargains on stuff like your gloves and leg pads. I use a pro-masque, maybe not top of the line, but still good quality and does the job well. My gloves? A pair of Tours I got on E-bay for $100 US. Yeah, I get a little sting in the hand now and then, but I can live with that. kill off enough brain cells and you end up drooling all over yourself, can't speak plain, and shooting basketballs...
Hope this helps a few people, especially the newbs..
Michael.

I had this okay Itech mask. I took a weird slapshot to the side of the head... to the side of the head... to the side of the head and there are no repercussions.
