| That's my point...That shirt isn't going to protect you from breaking anything. It's just going to protect you from hurting from a puck that scraped you. |

| I don't know about the ribs, but I have definitly taken some shots off of an unprotected hip when my c/a lifts up. I also wear an older style c/a that is much smaller than todays. I prefer it because it's more breathable and easier to move in. I might use something like this. |

| I don't think a shirt will help that much. I figure it's just part of the game. My trouble spot seems to be high in the catching glove side between the sleeve and shoulder cap. for some reason there seems to be a spot where one occaicionally gets through. I say live with it. Like my old high school coach used to say " theres a dirrerence between playing hurt and playing injured". |

a well designed padded shirt will prevent broken bones under the right circumstances. if a puck were to hit perfectly on a rib hard enough, it will break. (ribs are strong and have plenty of give, but it's not implausible for a puck to at least crack one).
These shirts are designed to deaden the impact to a degree, as well as distribute the force over a wider area. This reduces the point load of the reaction with your ribs to a more uniformly distributed load. This could easily be the difference between a broken or cracked rib vs. a nasty bruise.
Don't make me get into the physics and math of it. Just suffice it to say that it does work if executed properly - the question is how useful is it as it's a rare shot that makes it way through so cleanly that it has the force to do that kind of damage.
I may get one as I'm uptight about protection. _________________ random spelling mistakes added on purpose to annoy those that are annoyed by it. |

Jonathan Bernier wears a padded shirt underneath his regular gear. I think we can all agree he's a pretty good goalie. He doesn't need to prove anything by bragging about his machismo or manliness or whatever. He stops pucks, and he prefers to do it with as little injury to himself as possible.
Imagine the velocity of shots these guys are facing, especially in practice. Lots of goalies used beefed up gear (usually catch gloves) just for practice.
If you haven't tried to squeeze and freeze a shot that went between your arm and your chest and gotten a sweet bruise, then you will some day. I have played against some goobers who were somehow able to get the right velocity behind a puck to bruise me through my chest pad. |

Yeah, I read in the Goalie News, I can't remember which goalie, but he uses a triple-padded catch glove in practice. _________________
