im new to bein a goalie and i tried the butterfly slide that i see on a few youtube videos and it doesnt seem to work right. when i push off i hardly move and i dont slide at all, i just spin. Is this because I am playing on a lake? or am i just not doing it right?
any help/suggestions would be appreciated |

It might depend on what pads you're using. Can to share? _________________

| those have a nylon landing pad do they not? not the best material for slides. it's mostly leg power that is going to be needed to slide properly. plus if you're new it's going to take a lot of practice anyways. |

Do not jump, the landing can cause some injury to ligaments, your knees, and your hips. Work on form and technique (stick down, body square) slowly at first, then build up speed.
Load your pushoff leg, get a really good dig with the toe of your skate and go. As other suggested, it could be the pads, but you shouldn't be spinning around if your technique is good.
When you're not in nets, work on getting familiar with your edges and do some technical skating (goalie specific movements).
Sharp skates also help. |

Yes, those pads do have the Nylon of the sides. Once you stand practicing and building up more leg muscle, you should be able to get some slide. _________________

| k finally got on the ice again. i had to lift myself up a little and push off and i still only slid like maybe an inch or 2. there's a stripe on the insides of both legs and it hink thats whats making me stick to the ice. o well, the league i joined was for roller hockey anyway so it probably wont make a difference |

You should at least be getting the front half of the blade down, if not most of the blade. I don't see how anyone could do that part wrong, it's pretty natural.
It might be your pads. What kind do you have? |

The whole blade should be touching the ice upon push off.
Also he stated he had Mission Helium Elite Hockey Pads. |

Quick question, I have Bauer Vapor Senior leg pads, and I have literally the exact same problem.
I have powerful legs (ok, that sounds arrogant, but I'm trying to avoid some leg strength answers) as I squat well over 200 lbs. I weigh 195, and I seem to stick, is it my pads, and I just absolutely need to buy leather, or what?
And if that answer is yes, then what is a good set of cheap leg pads that won't get me killed. I regularly get shot at by NHL minor players (minor league team here in Vegas) and I don't want to die, haha, but I do want to save money wherever possible. I'm on the ground a LOT, and anything that is affordable (relatively speaking of course) would be great.
Thanks in advance for any help... _________________ Think YOUR goaltending is bad? Mine is so bad, I made a blog about it. I should rename it 'inspirational blog for anybody ELSE between the posts...'
