pushing when down is not about just pushing with your other leg. In part you need to transfer your body weight, while keeping the sliding direction leg on the ice, over top of the power push leg. Its like riding a bike and turning, you dont realize it at first, but when you go to turn say right you actually start the turn with a bit of flick to the left to start the lean the front actually deflects to the left and you turn right. So when your warming up next time on the ice, over exaggerate a little bit this weight transfer, actually kind of stand on the one push leg and pull that down pad off the ice and as you gain a feel for it, it will become more natural , the down pad will be lower and lower and eventually it will appear as if your just pushing to slide across the net.
while doing this practice your recoveries on the other side and slide back and forth. so when you slide to the right, you recover starting with your right leg being what you get up on, and to the left, your recovery will start with the left leg. _________________
