I'm curious if anyone else played this...

It's a game we played when I was on the U of Florida roller team, and when I was league director I kicked people out of open hockey early so a couple of us could work on it there. It's an excellent game for rebound control, anaerobic conditioning, and if you play it for a long enough stretch, stamina.

You play with 3-5 shooters. Preferably 5. The shooter stands with the puck in the slot a little below the hash marks, and fires a shot on net. Then all 5 players try to put the rebound in. They get 1 pass per shot, and have to move as quickly as possible. They can't stand there ready to shoot for 2 minutes until either you're bored or your legs collapse. If they score the goal, it's their point. If you freeze it, or the puck hits the boards it's your point.

First to 10 or 15 or 20... whatever, wins. Then you play another game. Half an hour to an hour of that is exhausting, and a ton of fun.

If a shot creates a rebound or a series of rebounds, you can spend up to a minute working your muscles with little rest, excellent anaerobic conditioning. If you play for an hour, it's basically like having a 60 minute penalty kill, and at the end of a hard practice or a 2 hour pickup, it's a great way to close out the night.

Sounds intense. I'll definately try that out with my sister and the other goalie on her team.

That's a great drill. We do it a lot at the dropin session I go to, since we rarely have less than 3 goalies show up. Excellent practice. We usually play to 5 points and switch goalies. There's a great variety in the regulars, so it's just as helpful for us to watch each other as it is to be in the net.

Yup, we do that all the time at the end of practice. Goalies usually always win though Laughing . It's a good game

I like this idea. I play a lunchtime pickup on Fridays, and usually towards the end of the hour alot of the guys have to leave and get back to work. But there's always 4-6 guys and myself out there wrapping it up. Perhaps I'll throw this idea out to them and see if anyone's interested.

Thanks!

Come to think of it, I saw the Red Wings do this with Ty Conklin before a game against the Stars a few months ago. A perfect all-level drill, I guess. Pretty fun to watch! Very Happy

Played this with my sister last night at her practice since the other goalie wasn't there. Had the other assistant coach playing with me. She beat us 3 games in a row Mad But that was mostly because we missed the net, or shot right at her where she could cover it probably about half the shots Laughing

it's a great game. but yes. the goalie wins almost every time. in a full semester (2 practices a week from start of sept to beginning dec) i think i lost the game 5 or 6 times... we played 2 or 3 per practice. @ pickup, we would play 4 or 5 games after the 2 hour pickup, i generally won them all 15-5... sometimes 15-0 sometimes 15-10. i lost a couple games going to 10 points, but after we changed it to 15, i didn't lose a single one in over 6 months doing it just about every single week.

we then started using it to train my youth travel goalies better rebound control and recovery fundamentals... after 2 weeks they were owning everyone, coaches included.

Are the guys allowed to pass it to each other or just jam away at it. Because the first option wouldnt really work.

When we played, it was just me and one other coach against my sister... so we played we were allowed 1 pass before shooting.

jedi - we do it so that you get 1 pass per shot. so the players can pass if they choose, but they can't do 2 consecutive passes. each pass has to be followed by a shot. so there's a lot of one timers and quick jams.

Good - Shot -> rebound -> pass -> shot
Good - Shot -> rebound -> shot
Bad - Shot -> rebound -> pass -> pass -> shot

We play this at the end of practice. Good game to work on rebound control. Lots of fun too. Gets very tiring if you play a few games in a row

We played this every day at practice when I was in HS...before practice...it was like a 10-20 minute warm-up for me, and it was all my coaches and two of the best players on our team would do it before practice and it was amazing, the first time I ever played it they lit me up with these beautiful shots in the top corners, but the next week after I never lost a game, it improved my own game tenfold because all of the shots are either quality, or they miss the net and someone else gets a quality shot, but I allowed them two passes per shot to really try to get me working across the crease...I would suggest doing it to every team.
