Forgive me if this has been brought up already... I have spent time on this forum, but not so much in the drills section.
Has anyone made a habit out of having a friend of family member attend various games of yours and video tape you from various positions... or you yourself set up a camera somewhere in the rink to record the game for analysis later?
I am curious as to how effective it is. I am wondering if you are able to learn anything from it, or given the probable poor vantage points accessible if traffic and angles are not really present to gain a real benefit. _________________ you're only as good as your last save

The best angles would probably from directly behind the net or from the far end of the ice with a zoom lens. Other then that, any video would definitely be helpful for picking up flaws in your game. _________________

No one isn't taping me. But I would love to see myself in action It would definitely help you just like canadian_man_44 said. I think it actually doesn't matter from where someone would record you. _________________

Getting someone to tape you is the BEST thing you can do.
Get someone to record whenever the puck enters your end that way it doesn't take so long to review. Even if you set the machine up on a tripod or a stand and just turn it on...that's better than nothing.
My daughter taped 98% of my son's games in the last two years and that has had a huge impact.
I watch it, slow it down when I need to, make some notes and then we watch it together.
When my son became a goalie 2 years ago I took over as goalie coach and I had a lot of learning to do. Having the ability to slow down the game and learn at my own pace made all the difference and it didn't affect our father/son relationship one bit because it was never about criticism. It was about learning together.
Even if you don't know what to look for...there are plenty of people who would be glad to help you out including me. I can always use the practice.
I never tell a goalie what to change I only give them options and information about how other goalies are handling similar situations.
It's fun.
Record and post. You'll be surprised at what you see. It's all in the details.
NOTE: Keep the view at a distance so that when the puck enters the zone you can get 'from the blue line in'. When that view finder shows the blue line at one side, and 'you in the net' at the other...the person recording should stop following the play. Just keep the camera sort of still and don't zoom in too much.
I can post an example if this is not clear. |

I agree that taping yourself is nothing but beneficial. When I was playing youth hockey I had one of my parents stand behind the net and tape me for a few games. I learned that many of the goals scored on me could have been prevented by staying on my feet longer and low and behold I ended up making more saves by doing so in future games.
If you have someone willing to stand there and tape you all game ,TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT!!!! |

| It helps, but only if you know how to dissect it how to make the changes to your game, and to what level want or can do this. |

My mom tries to videotape me, except I don't have a video camera yet, so she's been using my digital camera on the video function. Needless to say, the quality sucks.
Whenever I'm in a tournament in Toronto though, I get my uncle to come out and video tape me, and then he burns it onto a DVD for me to watch over and over. It's great, and it helps a lot. Sometimes people will tell you that you're doing something wrong, but you don't actually realize it until you see yourself doing it. _________________

one of the goalie camps i went to would have a video tape session, and then later in the day they would have u watch it with an instructor, and they would point out what you were doing wrong and right. it was very helpful.
I've had my mom tape a few of my games, normally it's set up at the opposite end, and is on a tripod. this is also very helpful and it's important to see the whole zone so on the tape you can see the play developing, and what you were or should've been doing. _________________ Pads-Simmons 993. Neat idea BISH... whenever my uncle did it, he would only focus on me and my crease... so I couldn't tell if I was in the right position when the play developped.
I'm buying my own video camera in the next few weeks, just need to get the money for it And I'll probably invest in a tripod as well to have better quality... and to make life easier for my mom _________________
