Most of you have seen videos of my sister or read some of my posts about her, but here's where we stand:
She's 12 years old (turning 13 in June)
She currently plays for the Sudbury Peewee 'A' team (highest level of girls hockey in our town)
she's trying out for the Bantam 'A' team next year as a first year, and she'll probably make it (mainly because there's barely any other goalies in her age category that can challenge her)
Now, she really wants to bump her game up to the next level, and see if she can crack the Midget AA roster in her 2nd year as a Bantam. Highly unlikely, and they probably wouldn't let her play even if she DID make it because of the lack of talent in her own age level, but I told her that if she goes out (even just for the ice time) and gets told that she would've made the team, I'd give her 200$. Now... getting to the main point of all this:
There are 2 really big areas she needs to work on:
1) Fitness - she's got quick feet and she's not slow by any means around the net, but if the puck stays in her end for long periods of time you can see her begin to get lazy (ie. lean on the post, not be as alert, etc.)
2) Movements (T-pushes, side-to-side [post-to-post], etc.)
I'm just looking for any drills that are specific to these two categories. I'm looking for more unique drills, I've already got her doing the usual net movements, ie. triangle drill, X drill... so I'm looking for something different. If you guys have any or happen to come across any it would be greatly appreciated Same thing for fitness, I've got her doing a bunch of butterflies and skating and recoveries in practice, but anything different would be great. She also runs 2km on our treadmill once or twice a week. _________________

1) I think the best way to gain "fittness" is long exercise at low heart rate (low heart rate means you can easilly talk while you run). An hour jog or walk would help. For me 2km sounds too short. And if it's done at full spead, it does nothing to the feature you are gaining.
If intrest for a jog is too low, then u could easilly gain durability by every exercise. While practising any quality of her's add more repetition to it. (my english sucks, i know) e.g. practising her glove catch you normally take ten pucks and shoot them in a row. Instead of ten take 15 to 20 pucks and shoot them in a row. Require best quality with the addins too. And this goes with every exercise.
I don't think there's any specific exercise on ice that would increase "fitness". _________________ "If you can dream it, you can do it." -Walt Disney

Well her normal hockey week is like this:
Sunday - 2km jog
Monday - day off, sometimes game
Tuesday - every 2nd Tuesday they have a practice. If no practice, 2km jog.
Wednesday - game last Wednesday of each month
Thursday - 1.5 hr practice
Friday - day off
Saturday - game/practice (1.5 hrs)
Last year it was better, the trainer/coach organised for them to have team dryland every Monday for 2 hours. This year they got stuck with coaches who still have the "Have fun and play hard" attitude, which isn't good for the really competitive girls.
I'll mention to her to begin jogging like 5km and increase from there.
itechwarrior - Yeah, how old did you think she was? _________________

That would be smart.
Here in Finland we pay a lot attention to physical training. Before every icetraining we have at least an hour off-ice practice. That usually icludes 15-20min jog (warm up), jumping exercise / wightlifting / balance / core. With juniors there's no wightlifting of course, but lots of strength exercise without weights and control of body.
I've heard that in Canada the office practice come to the picture only in higher level of hockey. If you'r coaching her, you could do some little extra with her before icepractises? Run together for 10min, do a short small streching, after that you could do some simple hand-eye cordination with a balance board. With the balance board u can easilly gain fittness to her legs too. Make her stand in the proper position, knees bent, and throw tennis balls to her. Make her to do squats in the balance board etc.
Yea, the balance board would be good, how didn't I think about that earlier. but yea, basic fittness still comes with long low heart rate exercise..suck, I know.
And just for point of comparison, my week's like:
Monday: 1h floorball
Tuesday: 1h jog before office, 1h office (usually weigths), 1h ice
Wednesday: day off
Thursday: 1h ice in the morning, 1h office (usually balance with the big fitness ball and weights), 1h ice (in the evening)
Friday: 1h office (usually core, little stairjumps and laddering)
Saturday: gameday, if not then 1h jog/walk
Sunday: gameday, if not 1h jog or other free choise exercise
EDIT: but I'm juuuuust a little older than your sister.. _________________ "If you can dream it, you can do it." -Walt Disney

man, puckstopper if you can go 5 posts without mentionin ur sister i'll ive u $200 lol....
get her on an exercise bike...i got my road bike on a trainer downstairs n bike 30-45(or at least 20 otherwise it's just a waste of time) minutes...it helps a ton. some days do lil sprint things...like go as hard/highest gear for about a minute, take about a 45 second break, and repeat....that'll increase her 'fitness'. _________________ Pads-Simmons 993. BISH - Everyone on here talks about themselves. how's this any different? My sister is a better goalie than I was at that age, and she's got talent. I'm trying to figure out how to make her better... correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that the whole point of this site? _________________

Stand in front of her...eye to eye and slap first with your right hand and then with your left hand in her face...she had to block it.
That is good for focusing and reaction.

Excercize bikes are a waste of time in general. You need to be on them for hours to see half the results of running |

Yeah the only time I ever use an exercise bike is when I'm at hockey tournaments at the hotels and our coach doesn't want us going for full-out runs between games, but I hate just sitting around not doing anything. so I go down to the little gyms and hop on the exercise bike or the elipticals just to keep the blood flowing. _________________

personally i hate running, i have bad knees and biking's alot easier on your knees, and not sure how you can say exercising on the bike is a waste of time, If your jus goin like an average of 10 mph or somethin then yah, it's a waste of time, but if you're actually pushing yourself, then you can get really good results... _________________ Pads-Simmons 993.
