Hey all, so I'm going to start goaltending again after about 3 years off (of course I only played a year and a half beforehand Cool ). Right now the pond rinks are melted, so the only thing I can do is public skating. I was thinking of getting my lower body pads on and practising, and was wondering what exercises you would recommend?

Right now I'm thinking of: -shuffles and pushing side to side in a butterfly position
-breakaways where I would just practise skaing backwards to a designated area when a friend just skates up to me, and I will dive or something ( could use some help on this)
-Overall skating and stopping, etc.

And thats about it, I don't think they will let me bring a stick or puck, so this is all that I can think of that I could get away with. Thanks a lot guys.

just go play drop in. Some rinks wont even let you put your pads on for PS.

It is common to see skaters of all ages and abilities on public skating sessions. Figure skaters are able to get in some practice during public skating sessions. Beginners, recreational skaters, and hockey players skate on sessions that are open to the general public. Most public skating sessions are about two hours in length, but some public skating sessions are longer or shorter. Music is usually played on the rink's loudspeakers during public skating sessions.

I would check for open hockey. I know the rinks around me let goalies play for free. I think that would be the best way to get back into it.

Hey,

If it is possible to do drills at the open skate at the rink, it is good to stick with the basics.

Suffle (short and long)
T-push (short and long)
Butterfly Slides

Since you have played so little concentrate on technique.

I agree with Matt. We use to do this in the off season. My local rink allows us goalies to wear our gear and practice (just no pucks or anything) stick to the basics like Matt said. Also see if you have drop in or open hockey. Again I did it in the off season because I noticed if i had 3 months off i got slow and sloppy and it took twice as long to get back to where I was. Even tho it probably wont be the same level your use to its still good practice.
