Way too much, plus shipping (probably half the entire cost right there), plus finding a spot for it, plus taking care of it

I think if you're willing to put in the time its a worthwhile investment. Consider the amount of ice time that you could get in per week. If its just going to sit there and gather dust then I agree, way too much money.

[edit]removed redundant 'ice' in sentence[/edit]

It would be the practice ice... or my trip to Thailand...

I'll go with Thailand. Wish I had some ice too though Sad

the intro price is not that bad at all, esp with the cost of ice rentals, or goalie camps.
the reg price is clearly intended for a biz. the material is expensive, and as most things right now, costs are only going to go up substantially.

I was just at one of the biggest state owned sport facilities here in Switzerland. This place is where a lot of the national teams come for their workouts and to have performance analysis done. When I noticed a Swiss Ice Hockey vehicle in the parking lot of one of the buildings (apparently the Swiss national team was there for the week) I asked whether they had a rink.

Apparently they don't but plans are underway to have one ready in 2009, and get this, its going to be artificial ice! We had a 15 minute discussion about artificial ice, advantages/disadvantages, growing popularity, etc.

I was amazed that such a high profile sports institution would go with artificial ice.

Hey suz8934, you think your sig pic is the follow-up of mine? Laughing Laughing

Its not synthetic ice but rather a plastic that can also be used for the same purpose I suppose. They have a disclaimer about using with skates (right after saying its possible but with is substantial wear and damage) so if you want a more long term solution I'd suggest the $360 stuff.

Artificial surfaces have come a long long way in the past 25 years. there are several D1 schools that are adding small 1/3 rink surfaces, and many figure skating clubs are adding them. ASK me and I think its a way better alternative to roller hockey, just because the movements are identical, not poking fun at the sport of roller hockey at all, but its not the same.

ok sooo... i called them up and asked if they would sent me a sample tile of their synthetic ice. they agreed and about a week later it was in my mail box. its not what i expected it to be...AT ALL. for one its not smooth, slippery, or even white for that matter. i dont see how you could skate on it. its basically just dense plastic and i am fairly sure that i could run down to the local plastic store and whip up something similar. as for using it to slide on (such as butterfly slide) it might work but not like ice. and it seems like it would get chewed up from skates. best comparison i can think of is its like a really dense plastic cutting board.

feel free to ask questions
