Well, as now the hockey season is officially over, I want to start to train off ice. I was looking at what i can do at home to help me out. Right now i just go in my basement, put on my road hockey pads and bounce a ball of the wall and catch it. But, that really doesn't do it. I really need to work on:
i) *Flexibility*
ii) *Leg strength*
iii) *MY SHOT*
Yeah, well thats basically it so far. Those are my first priorities. Any help please!!! _________________

| As far as Shot goes, anything to strengthen your wrists will help a lot. Outside of that, grab your gloves, stick, some pucks and like a couple pieces of plywood (or actually probably something smoother). Use one as a backdrop, and if you want put like an X in the center so you have something to aim for, and then use the other to shoot the pucks off of. Not quite as good as using ice, but as off ice goes, that helped me a lot. |

OK,i like that. I got a pretty smooth basement floor. The only problem i have of this is wrecking the bottom of my stick. I have a wooden one i will probably use instead. Thanks. I will check another thread as far as working out my wrist goes. Any other help? _________________

I was also thinking of putting weights on the bottom and top and middle of the stick to help me shoot. Probably 3 pounds on each end, and work my way up to 5 or 10 throughout the summer. I may also tart to shoot bricks _________________

Flexbility: Yoga works wonders, and just stretch when you wake up in the morning and at night and you'll find yourself getting more flexible.
Leg strength: Stairs, squats, lunges, sprints... basically anything involving your legs will work. I've been going to the arena where my spring ice is about 2 hours before ice time and running the stairs there. My sister's coming along with me tomorrow, we'll see how she handles it. Oh, the chair (sitting against a wall at a 90 degree angle) is amazing. Really works your thighs a LOT.
Shot: Wrist exercises, and just practice. I've started shooting 100 pucks a day in my garage and I can see and feel my shot getting better and easier. |

One word. Kettlebells.
I've been using them for years (ever since I quit playing) and I swear I could have outskated anyone on my team even with my gear on had I known about them when I played. It's another reason I can't wait to play again, as I have far greater strength and endurance than at any time during my playing career. You can get info about there here.
There is also a great stretching book written by the guy who brought kettlebells to America in 2000 (might have been a little earlier than that) that you can get here.
Any questions feel free to ask. |
