|

Okay i am new Goalie and i just started 2 months ago and I'm 15 and i want to know what are the basic , or most likely exercises/Stretches i can do to be able to do a butterfly in a month or so?
I do not have a goalie coach on my high school team and he only helps out the players who play out, so i just basically try learn on my own and all he does is shoot pucks, i learned lots from forums videos etc, but i need to know the stuff that can help me do the butterfly if i continue to do them.
So please, someone help me. |

First of all congrats on making a high school team with only two months under your belt.
Make sure you stretch your groin really well, it's the only place i've hurt, so make sure you do that above all if your going to butterfly.
Before putting on your gear, sit down and put your feet together. Slowly push down on your knees so that they are almost horizontal. That should provide a good stretch.
Stretching your legs is required, but i'm not really sure how to explain it that well. Help here. _________________ http://www.youtube.com/user/JustVeejProductions

To get a great butterfly you need hip internal rotation - here is a simple stretch that may help bring your butterfly along.

I hope this helps a little.

| Guys - follow Maria's advice. I've been a subscriber on her YouTube and her websites for about half a year now and they're extremely beneficial. I recently bought her UGT (Ultimate Goalie Training) program and love it. |

This is good stuff! Wish I found this sooner. I'll be taking a look and hopefully it will improve my game a little. Still can't do a butterfly, but I have been working on the techniques I can do, and improving my speed. _________________ Pens Win in 2009! Stanley Cup!

| I don't understand why you are saying you can't do a butterfly. Everyone can do one, do you mean you can't get it that wide? |

I mean I can't do one. When I go down, I can't turn my feet out to the side. I am working on stretching and stuff, but that is my basic problem. When I go down, my legs and feet stay under my body, and that's about it. I can spread my feet a bit under me, but the pads don't rotate because I can't get my legs in the proper position. I'm working on it though. _________________ Pens Win in 2009! Stanley Cup!

Check out this new software and website where you and your friends can take video and watch it together and mark it all up. Just launched in beta, join and help us make this a new tool to help coaches and goalies share and learn with a great new software.

I am constantly on the look-out for the best training tools and resources available for aspiring goalies. I was very fortunate to have come across a unique set of DVD's by John Stevenson of The Goalie Centre. John put a ton of work into producing a set of DVD's that cover in detail some of the very best goalie drills that goalies of any age or level can do to jump way ahead of the pack.

Folks,
Be careful and be aware. The guys who claim they cannot do a Butterfly is likely becuase their Femurs are not shaped the way they need be to enable this type of position. Many Goalies are tearing their Labrums (diagnosed by Trainers as "Needs more massage, suck it up.") or developing hip problems which will put them out of Hockey unless they do one of two things:
1) Learn Hybrid/Standup (Go Brodeur Go).
2) If you really want to play full Butterfly, get an exray, bring it to someone who knows about this issue and if needed, get your bones shaved. Yes, if you shave your bones, you'll be back on ice in 1-2 months and playing games in 10-12 weeks, and finally be able to do full splits, never mind Butterfly.
If you can do a partial Butterfly (pro-fly), then before you start going to far stretching for more range, get an exray anyway. It doesn't hurt to be sure you might not be built like Patrick Roy. If you wait too long, you'll wind up like some marginal NHL Goalies who are playing today with torn Labrums who with shaved bones and surgery to fix their Labrums, might be playing much better. _________________ Majiktom |

the b-fly style was pretty natural for me. I didnt have hardly any problems with it. my issue is my hip flexor muscles now that im getting back into. I noticed after our game Friday night where I made a lot of split type saves that I was really sore. And I stretch a lot. Its frustrating that i'm having such a hard time getting the flexibility back that I had back in the day especially with the split saves that I was known for. I tend to be really hard on myself for some reason even tho I just play in a beer league.
Maria has some really good stretches and exercises that would benefit you. I just ordered her program and am excited to apply it to my goaltending as well as the kids I coach _________________ Michelle |
