I wonder if anyone has tried this. I don't see anything similar in other threads, so I'll share.

I practiced with my brother and a few of his inline teammates tonight, and their goalie did some coaching with me, including this enlightening "rope drill" he came up with when he was starting out. Here's a rough diagram-sorry for the poor quality, but I think it gets the idea across.

He tied a length of rope in the middle of the crossbar (green lines), equal length on both sides. Actually they are too short in the image-it ends up being a pretty narrow lane and the stick should reach past the slot. The goalie stands between the ropes facing forward, and a friend skates to different shooting positions holding the stick so the ropes stay taut. It shows the goalie exactly which angles are available to the shooter from just about everywhere, and how being forward or back affects those options. As a visual learner I found this very helpful!

I have acctually seen this a few times. I did it to. You really have to do it for a while to build memory of where the posts are when you take the rope off.

I'm not sure if i follow what your saying but we do a drill similair. it really helps to realize how much angles really matter.

Hm, my silly diagram came out microscopic. It's hard to describe it verbally, BISH00, so let me try again with the pic.

Like I said, your friend hangs onto the stick to pull the ropes taut and skates around as if he or she is on a tether. You move with the lane it creates. The width of the lane tells you how much net is actually blocked by your body from a shooter's perspective. Again, the ropes should be a lot longer than my diagram suggests. How does the drill you mentioned work, BISH00?

I have a pretty good grasp of the size of the net and the proximity of things and people on the rink, but I am used to playing way too deep. My friend used this to a) coax me out of the crease, and b) teach me to stay square (since not moving with him meant getting clotheslined).

huh, that's a good idea...the drill we did was similair, but imagin switching the triangle of rope turned around so you have one on each post, coming out where they meet at a point, it has to be fairly long rope. But you put a goalie in the net, and then you put the point of the ropes on ice level, the view of a puck. Then the other goalies look at how much difference there is in coverage when the goalie in the net is deep, compared to when the goaltender is farther out. Hope that made sense.

I've heard of your drill Bish but zanalee's seems more effective, I need to try that sometime...

Can't take credit for this, it was my friend's idea!

Essentially BISH's drill is the same, but you see the angles from the opposite perspective. I'll have to give it a try.

My former coach several years ago had a good rope drill.

As u can see the rope (green) is tethered to the posts, the other side he had it tethered to the puck. (he had a little screw in the puck). He also had a hole in the puck so he could put the stick in. Then he was skating around and I had to follow him. I should always go a bit around my body so there was no empty space in the net.... Hope you understand what I mean.

That's a really cool idea! Actually, my friend was all upset yesterday-he's like "I did the rope thing wrong!" He said he had the triangle backwards and it should have been tied the way bish and kari have described. I said, "But it worked, you know . . ." The idea is so simple, it seems like a lot of different variations could be done.

and one thing i forgot to mention. Its better if you use an elastic rope so the player can go farther and closer...
