Well basically you're just driving your knees down to the ice as quick as possible on low shots to take away more of the bottom of the net.
In terms of how to do it... I'll let the other guys explain. I could show you, but to explain it via internet? Not my thing. |

| Sharp skates...seriously. That's the most crucial factor to butterfly goaltending. You need to have a good ready stance that allows you do drive to the ice fast...dull skates will slide out and you'll end up falling instead of stopping the puck. It's fairly easy though. I stand with my feet a bit wider than shoulder width apart and when I read a low shot coming in...well actually ANY shot coming in...I drive my knees to the ice kicking my feet out as far as I can while keeping my knees together. That's the butterfly. Your best bet though is to YouTube it and see if you can find some instructional video. There's also a great training video called "ProHybrid Training" that is supposed to be excellent. |

Yeah I wouldn't go with sharp skates for roller.
I just recently got the new Graf G50s I got hollowed at 3/8", which my old skates were supposed to be at one time. And all I can say is that it took me the better part of a practice to adjust and I still am a bit shaky.
One of the players took it after practice and said 'what the hell? are you going to cut bread with these?'. When your skates are so sharp a forward is surprised, its time to think about changing the hollow.
I'm personally going to wait it out though (getting it baked tomorrow) and see how it feels once baked and worn in. It might just be my legs reacting to the pain thats hindering my skating. _________________ Efe

I play roller/inline hockey too, so i'll try. first i'm gonna say that i have no goalie skates. just normal players skates. works fine for me, had no issues yet - maybe because we play with (hockey)-balls. Dare you any comment arth!
Yeah, but i've had no issues with the butterfly as well. The rolls get some grip on the concrete floor and in the gym as well so you don't have to bother about sharpening. Best way to get it down is just to try it yourself. Get the feel of the grip, if you have the chance get another goalie to show you how you could improve your stance and things like that. As PS has already said it's pretty tough to explain. For me learning by doing helped most, no matter how canned that may sound. |
