watched Ovechkin's post game interview from yesterday... in a 4 and a half minute clip, he must've said "we have to score goals" "score goals" or "scores goal" 3 dozen times. i think we all can tell his mindset. he must wake up in his sleep screaming "SCORE GOALS! I MUST SCORE GOALS!"... but in russian of course. _________________ Because it hurts so good.

Shame on Ovechkin for his comments made after the Rangers morning skate. He should'nt have even been at the skate anyhow. He has had more antics over the last couple of months than Sean Avery. _________________

Varlamov gets his first shutout in his second game.
think they'll ride him the rest of the way? I hope so... the kid's got talent. |

| Oh I'm sure he'll be playing the rest of the series. I wouldn't say he was brilliant in goal, and sometimes even a little sloppy with one lucky play where his D got the stick on the puck deflecting it into the post...but he was certainly more solid in this game than Threeorfour. Just like all the new talent showing off in the playoffs (MAF last year, Hiller, *shudder* Price) what's important to see now is if he'll play that way consistently and give Ovie and the Caps a chance. |

I agree with arth in that he is going to play the rest of the series. I just don't think that Jose is solid enough in net to hold down the fort on a team that plays such an offensive system like Washington. As much as I want the Rangers to win, I still think that Ovechkin and the rest of the guys are great players. It's terrible that they have to play each other in the very first round. _________________ Itech X-Wing Pro C/A

| But I believe it's quite possibly the best first round matchup as far as teams go. Both teams have great forwards and now both teams have great goalies. It seems like every other matchup is one vs. the other. Like SJS and ANA. SJS have the shooters/defense, but Ana has the goaltending with Hiller. |

Yes, he did get the shutout for the caps, and that’s great and all. But I think it's a bit early to be saying that he’s got lots of talent. Of course he has Talent because he is in the NHL, but still. _________________

I didn't say he had lots of talent, just that he had talent. People were saying the same thing about Price when he filled in... and yet, look where he ended up. So yes, Varlamov could easily have a bad game and then be down and out. But - if you look at his stats specifically at the 07-08 season playoffs
Played in the russian super league, posted 5 shutouts in 16 games, and had a 1.62 GAA.
Even if you look at when he's been called up this year so far, he's 4-0-1 with a .918 sv % and 2.37 GAA. And that's not including the playoffs.
For his AHL team, he's 19-7-1 with a .916 sv% and 2.40 GAA.
He's a guy to keep an eye on... if he continues this well for the rest of the playoffs, I could see him easily challenging Theodore for the starting position next year. |

Challenging? Consider it a done deal if he can carry Washington beyond a few rounds. _________________ Itech X-Wing Pro C/A

| if he'll keep them in he sure will be starting in further games and probably next year. But keep in mind that is guy is still a young kid on the goalie position. We can't tell anything about consistency right now and so it's kinda hard to say that he will carry the Caps over the next few rounds. Anyways, if he keeps doing like this they will sure knock the Rangers off. In Monday night's game the rangers didn't know any means to get by him though they were somehow stunned by the returning of washingtons offensive power. All in all: they played a huge of a crap. if they keep on getting dumb penalties(just think about avery) and throwing the puck in the zone with no real intentions, washington will have it's way paved by their opponent. |
