habs re-sign Tomas Plekanec to a 2 year deal. While also signing free-agent defencemen Mathieu Biron and Jamie Rivers to one-year contracts.

Re-signing Pleks to a new contract is a great thing. I only wish they could have made it a long term contract.

Montreal traded Patrick Traverse for Mathieu Biron. In his career Traverse has played 279 games, 65 points, has a +/- of +2. In his career Biron has played 253 games, got 44 points and has a +/- of -69. Seems like a stupid trade to me.

Rivers seems to be a stay at home defenseman. He doesn't score many goals(1 goal 3 assists in 31 games last year), but, he also doesn't seems to hurt the team much. His +/- in 31 games last year was -7, so a total of 11 goals were scored while he was on the ice. The thing that scares me about him is he is a 10 year veteran who has never played a full season yet.

They also picked up Janne Lahti, a six foot, 200 pound Left winger from Finland. No stats available on ESPN because he's never played in North America before.

The Canadians are hardly any better they'll never make the playoffs, maybe Tuukka Rask will come through for the Bruins. He better because they traded Andrew Raycroft for him. But the Canadians also lost Sheldon Souray and he was one of their best players. They'll actually do worse than the Bruins. I predict Bruins 9th and Canadians 11th. Shocked

The Canadiens lost Souray and replaced him with Hamrlik. Hamrlik is better defensively, so, in spite of losing those goals on the power play, the Habs should be better without Souray coughing up the puck in their own zone.

And where will they replace those goals? Not to mention their goaltending is less than solid. Razz

Anyone that actually calls having Huet, Halak, Danis and Price to choose from less then solid goaltending really needs to start watching some games.

As far as replacing the goals Souray scored, let's see now. He had a total of 64 points with a +/- of -28. Hamrlik, who is replacing him, had 38 points and had a +/- of +22. So, Souray was on the ice for 64 goals for Montreal and 92 against. That doesn't say much for his defensive skills. Hamrlik was on the ice for 60 goals for and only 16 goals against. When you break it down that way, Hamrlik is the better defenseman to have on the team because he actually knows how to play defense. He won't be giving up the puck in the defensive zone like Souray did. Also, Hamrlik will be an asset for the whole game, while Souray was pretty much just an asset on the powerplay.

Actually I bet Fernandez will start for the Bruins this year. He's much better than Rask.
