So we had our first on-ice evaluation tonight, which was just a fancy way to say "let's go out and scrimmage just so we can rank the new girls". so we did a couple skating drills, then scrimmaged.

Of course, they split the girls into 2 sessions; Midget and Intermediate, so I was the only goalie at the Intermediate session.

I did okay, but certainly not the greatest. I've been fighting off a flu for about a week now, and I didn't do any training over the summer, so my play was really sloppy. Mind you, I only allowed 1 goal - not the greatest, but not horrible. The girl went for the wraparound, but got to the far post (my glove side) pulled it out and I went down WAY too early and she fired it over my shoulder.

I made a few nice saves, one where a girl had a breakaway coming in from my glove side, then cut across the crease to try to put it around me, but I got my leg over far enough to stop it. Then, when she tried to knock in her rebound, I reached over with the heel of my stick and ended up passing it out to my defencewoman.

Other than that, not too much to tell... in the warm-ups I made a decent save, went off my blocker then I batted it right out of the air into the corner.

Our first team practice is this Thursday, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to go or not since I'm scheduled to work Mad

Food Basics, not much better Laughing I'm gonna try to get someone to cover my shift, but we're undergoing major changes atm. Switching from privately owned to corporate, and apparently they're real strict Shocked So I dunno if it'll be a problem cancelling it or not.

Laughing

So I tried calling in, and the girl who would've taken my shift felt so bad, but they asked her to take a night shift that night literally 3 hours before I called. So no hockey Sad

but on the bright side, our first season game is next Thursday Very Happy and I'm making sure to book it off Very Happy

It's too bad I don't have my custom painted helmet yet though Sad I really wanted to have it for the beginning of the season.

Okay so our season ended up being delayed due to ice constraints, and our first game was tonight.

We won 3-1, the goal they scored wasn't unstoppable, but it was a nice shot from about 2-3 feet out, coming from behind my net on my catcher side. The girl fired it over my glove side shoulder... I could've moved out a little to cut off the angle.

Other than that, I did okay. first game of the season, and it seemed like evrything was wrong... my skates needed to be sharpened, then my laces came untied, and I picked up my new helmet on the weekend and decided to try it out in my first game (NOT A GOOD IDEA) the straps were too loose so it was dangling around my head for the first period until I could adjust them. Then in the third one of the straps on my pads came undone and slid under my skate, nearly causing me to fall a couple of times.

I wasn't tested a whole lot, probably had about 10-15 shots total. 2 scrambles in front that I couldn't cover, but kept my pads sealed along the ice. Made one really nice save: girl on my glove hand side passed across the middle of the ice (where were my D?) to a girl wide open on my blocker side, so I butterfly slid over and got it with my toe. Probably the only highlight from the game.

Next game is Thursday, I'm getting my skates sharpened and I'll be wearing my helmet at my sister's practice the night before to get used to it better. And I'll fix up the straps... should be a better game, but apparently their goalie sucks balls... the only goalie in the league who was better than me switched and is playing on the midget 'A' girls team, so we only have 3 teams, and I'm probably the best out of all 3. The goalie we played tonight always flops down and does a half butterfly save for ANY shot. And her rebound control is horrible.

I still need to work on recovery speed, I noticed I was tiring out by the third period, I need to increase my endurance.

Me too Evil or Very Mad But it was only the first game, and we ended up winning... I talked to the goalie on the other team today (we go to the same school) and apparently she was having major issues with her stuff as well Laughing

Okay we had our second game tonight and we won 2-1 Smile They scored with something like 5 minutes left in the third, and it was a shitty goal Mad Pass came from 2 feet off the goal line from my catcher side, across the crease, and I butterfly slid over. I could've easily just poked it out, but no. I had to be dumb about it. And I ended up oversliding my post, so the girl managed to get it behind me, and it just sat there on the goal line for what seemed like an eternity. And it was one of those moments where I should've dove back to get it, but it was like my body was completely unwilling.

I did make one nice save on a similar situation though. My new defensewomen have a hard time staying on the girl in front, so I often have to stop point blank shots. This time pass came from the corner right out in front, I butterflied and got it with my toe. Doesn't sound impressive, but it looked nice. Then there was a nice-ish save that was mostly pure luck. Shot came from the blue line through traffic, and I was off in my own land, but managed to get my stick down. Now here's the weird part Confused It rolled up my stick, and kept bouncing off my blocker until I could direct it off to the side Laughing You would've had to see it. But it sure kept me focussed afterwards.

Next game isn't until Monday, but I'll be going on the ice with my sister's team again on Saturday.

3rd game: We won 4-0

It was a lot closer than it sounds, and I had a GREAT game. I made one rediculous save, which I don't feel like describing because I have a video that gets the gist of it. I just need to upload it to YouTube, and you can all sit and enjoy the wonderfulness of the save. Okay, maybe not - but it was a wicked save, by most people's standards. A la Hasek, if you may.

The rest of the game was good, I was nice and sharp all night long. Stayed square to the puck, and made one nice glove save on a deflection.

Videos to come soon.

So I finally got around to posting it on YouTube, it has a better description on there - but here's the link for my kick-a$$ save. It doesn't look as good since the ref got in the way, but it was made with the heel of my stick right on the goal line, not like the player had just shot into my body by mistake.

4th game: Won 5-1

Intense game, against the same team we played against last game. Didn't have as many shots, probably about 15 or so.

HIGHLIGHT: Puck got passed out from the corner of my glove side to a girl wide open in front. I get a good strong t-push, and she 1-times it, so I drop to the butterfly and make a BEAUTIFUL toe save with my left leg. It wasn't much, but the way I executed it was probably the best I've ever done.

the goal: happened with 2 seconds left in the 2nd period. Girl had the puck at the hashmarks but off to my glove side a bit. My defensewoman challenged her, and the girl fired the puck toward my left pad, but it went off my defencewoman's foot and was deflected through my 5-hole. My stick had moved over to try and knock the puck if it had came along the ice toward my pad. So overall not horrible, but not an amazing goal by any means.

the ugly: we score off a scramble where their goalie ALMOST had the puck but we poked it loose, the ref never blew the whistle. VERY next play, whistle is blown at their end, our forward is just casually skating by the side of the post and WHAM! their captain drills her into the post head first. Thankfully our girl wasn't injured, she pulled herself up and off the ice but had a headache after. she finished the game but i think she was planning on going to the clinic or somethign tomorrow. their captain got a 5 minute major and a game misconduct for checking from behind, so she's gone for 3-5 games.
