It seems like Sean Avery has his talents (although most of that talent is just to be irritating), but at least he scores goals more than most people who are like that in the NHL so it's not like he's completely unproductive on the front end.

The Rangers did a lot worse without him. They showed some stat of the winning percentage with Avery in the line up and without him, and it was quite a bit higher with him in the line up. He can score goals, he's a great player. Other than scoring goals, his job is to make it miserable for the other team and get under their skin. I'd take him on the Bruins, he isn't a bad teammate, everyone knows when he's on the ice, and he scores.
