YOU HAVE 15 SECONDS !!!
Interesting Point of view...
In a game the only thing that really matters and that we really have control on is our ability as goaltenders to stay within the moment. If one looks at it,what really effects our game is THE ABILITY to control our emotions and not allowing the emotion to control us.
The minute or moment we allow our thoughts to get out of our
the reality( which is one shot at a time) we actually
do ourselves more harm then good.
Why?
Because when we are out of our element( which is to be and
stay in the moment one shot at a time)we are no longer present.
If we are not present in the moment our natural ability of stopping
the puck is effected.
Being out of our element starts the moment when we realize how
much time there is on the clock, what the score is,how many people are at the game, how important the game is etc..
In order to build on the ability of staying in the moment,a goalie must
experience what it is to face the big game, the big challenge and yes disappointment because then can he really see how easy it is to come out of the MOMENT BOX.
It's the only way to learn about staying in the moment one shot at a time but it must be practiced in every moment.
So when we are faced with situations in which we are battling the inner demons, welcome the situation because that is the time to learn. To learn when faced with limited challenges is not learning but when faced with major inner mental demons that is the best time to learn; so welcome that moment when it does happen but look at it as something that is not part of you.
When you feel or sense yourself stepping outside the IN THE MOMENT BOX realize that without feeling it you can't understand it but bring yourself back inside the MOMENT BOX.
It's like never knowing what is hot and cold..
How can you ever know if hot can hurt you without experiencing it?
In order to know what is hot one must experience the sensation of the burn.Once you experience it you have the ability to better understand what that hot is harmfull.
It is the EXACT same process when faced with the inner mental demons when playing goalie.
When a goal is scored or something goes wrong which takes you out of the
IN THE MOMENT BOX, remind yourself that in order to realize that you are outside you have to live it ...feel it..but NEVER allow it to control your thoughts.
YOU HAVE 15 SECONDS TO ERASE ANY THOUGHTS THAT TAKE YOU OUT OF YOUR " IN THE MOMENT BOX"
You have the talent to stop the puck. That is something that you can control
when you practice your skills during team practice and any private sessions.
But your mind likes to play with you by using emotions AND YOUR MIND needs to be worked on also.
So start today to build on your ability to stay IN THE MOMENT BOX.
When a goal is scored,REWIND AND REVIEW for 15 seconds and never allow it to come in to your MOMENT BOX no matter what!!!
If it wants to beat you up after 15 seconds find a way to let it go..
For example say" get away from my moment I don't need you"
Because the moment that it happens it is done..It is in the past.
The only thing you can control is NOW.It's the MOMENT BOX.
After all it's only a game right?
Regular season games, playoff games, tournament final games are no different if you master the IN THE MOMENT BOX.Because if you stick to one shot at a time and never let anything else come in to play you will never put any weight on your shoulders no matter how important the game is.
It is a known fact that success is guaranteed the more you are relaxed and in the moment.
Your success not only depends on your skills but also your ability to stay IN THE MOMENT BOX.
Goaltenders are a different breed and the great ones control what happens between their ears..
WE PLAY AN INDIVIDUAL POSITION IN A TEAM SPORT BUT THE PUCK STOPS WITH US...
Our worst enemy is allowing ourselves to come out of the MOMENT BOX.
So next time you feel angry, disappointed about something that went wrong remember that the real problem at that moment is that you are out of your IN THE MOMENT box and you should be spending 15 seconds on clearing your mind and then it's done..It's in the past..

The ideas seemed good, but the author's writing skills leave something to be desired. It was quite difficult to read. Thanks for posting it, though. |

Sorry about the writing skills if they are not up to some individuals standards on this forum but being French as my primary language does cause some challenges at times.
As long as the message made sense and some of you understood I guess it was worth giving my overview on it. _________________ Program your mind for success today !!

I suppose my standards are a bit higher, as I happen to be an English teacher. I didn't realize you weren't a native speaker of English. I certainly wouldn't have guessed it from your name. My apologies.
I do recommend working on your organization. The ideas are there. The problem is in the way they are presented. |

Sounds like an awesome idea. I was just happy there wasn't many spelling errors
I'm definitely going to try this at my next game, and teach my younger goaltenders the basic idea.

I like to keep up discussion about this topic. I find these mental issues most important part of the goaltending. Technic is also important, but u don't make any use of it, if your mind isn't in to it.

I don't quite agree. People work hard for a game. Usually 3-5 practise in a week for a single game on a weekend. It's not just a game, it's THE GAME. Games are everything in a Hockey, Soccer..and every other teamsport. That is all the fun in the sport. At least i wouldn't find it funny just practise and never play and measure how much I have accomplized.
You'r right about the fact that after goal you have to let go, but we shouldn't never underestimate the meaning of THE GAME. That won't lead us very far.
What is that exactly? We now recognize the situation when we are NOT in the moment box (watching clock etc.). How do we recognize the situation that we ARE in the moment box? Or do we?
How can we reach this BOX? Just focusing on the next shot and then focusing to be focused on the next shot?
For my expierience the key word for all this is ENJOY. What do you say about that? At games I focus just to enjoy the game. The BOX comes along with it. And not to lose the moment, I would add ENJOY THE MOMENT. That's all you got. _________________ "If you can dream it, you can do it." -Walt Disney

aalperi - I agree with what you're saying about it's not just a game to many people... but as much as I like to go out there and kick ass and take it seriously, in the grand scheme of things it's just that - a game. Unless you're at a higher level, getting paid for each game... then it's work. But fun work.
I don't think you should know at that moment that you're in the moment box, because then you'd be removing yourself from it, because you get to thinking about it.
It's like when you have a shutout going, but the minute you start thinking about it, you tend to let in a goal. At least, that's the way it is with me. For the whole game, you know you've got the shutout going, but the minute it becomes what you're actively thinking about, it screws you up. So you can't really stop and think, "Oh, I'm in the moment box now!" because then you get thinking of what you'd be doing if you weren't in the moment, etc.. _________________
