While arguing a call, a player puts his hand on a referee's shoulder. Said player was thrown out of the game for abuse of officials.

IMO, it is never OK to lay a finger on a ref. You can argue a call till you're blue in the face, but contact (intentional) is no-no.

What do you guys (and girls) think?

I don't think he should have been thrown out of the game...maybe a minor penalty but that's bout it.

and to be honest, i've never seen a ref reverse his call because a player was complaining....

Keeping in mind that rules change from league to league, here's what some rulebooks say:

NHL Rulebook wrote:
Rule 40 – Abuse of Officials

40.1 General Description – A player, goalkeeper, Coach or non-playing person shall not challenge or dispute the rulings of an official before, during or after a game. A player, goalkeeper, Coach or non-playing
person shall not display unsportsmanlike conduct including, but not limited to, obscene, profane or abusive language or gestures, comments of a personal nature intended to degrade an official, or persist in disputing a ruling after being told to stop or after being penalized for such behavior.

...

Rule 41 – Physical Abuse of Officials

...
41.2 Automatic Suspension – Category I - Any player or goalkeeper who deliberately strikes an official and causes injury or who deliberately applies physical force in any manner against an official with intent to
injure, or who in any manner attempts to injure an official shall be automatically suspended for not less than twenty (20) games. (For the purpose of the rule, “intent to injure” shall mean any physical force which a player or goalkeeper knew or should have known could reasonably be expected to cause injury.)

41.3 Automatic Suspension – Category II - Any player or goalkeeper who deliberately applies physical force to an official in any manner (excluding actions as set out in Category I), which physical force is applied without intent to injure, or who spits on an official, shall be automatically suspended for not less than ten (10) games.

Then you can ask; should this rule be applied to all contacts between players and players? I don't think it should. I believe the key factor in this regard is intention. If this person did it in such a way that was demeaning to the referee, that would give the referee reason to throw him/her out.

However, the NCAA rulebook is much more harsh and direct in regards to player-official contact:

NCAA Rulebook wrote:
Rule 6- Playing Rules

Abuse of Officials and Other Misconduct

Section 1.m. A player shall not physically or deliberately make contact with an official before, during or after the game.
PENALTY—Disqualification.

The standard quote format:

[ quote = "whoever/whatever"] the text [ / quote]

Just delete all the extra spaces within the brackets and replace whoever/whatever (leave " signs alone) with the person/organization name.

Hope I didn't misunderstand?

Thanks for the quote, Efe.

Our league rules is a hybrid, but the jist of it is there.

The ref actually told the player to stop arguing and go to the penalty box, but then said player persisted, contact (however brief it was) was made, and ref called the bench penalty.

Confused I hate it when men turn into whiny boys.

I just don't know about this, I didn't see the call in question.

Personally unless it had a rude vibe to it, I find putting your hand on someones shoulder conveys honesty and sincerity.

After save when I pick up the puck with my gave and the ref takes it out, sometimes they'll say "good save" or something similar and pat you on the shoulder. Then the do it to the other guy later on maybe, or when we tap a team mate with a stick, its just little gestures that you naturally do.

Agree completely. If my player got kicked out for touching a referee in said way, I'd probably be likely to scream at the ref anytime he came close to my crease for fear of him touching me.

Well, he was arguing the call and he wouldn't budge when they told him to get to the penalty box.

Bah, everyone gets caught up in the heat of the moment during the game. Just SHUT UP AND PLAY HOCKEY ALREADY! Laughing

Laughing Laughing Laughing

I touch refs all the time, mostly to let them know I am in the vicinity and moving.

Careful! Shocked FS might have to make a comment about how gay you are!

Wink I like the idea though.

Well it seems they like to skate away from things while still looking at them, hence leading them to skate backwards occasionally so if our paths are going to cross I want to make sure I don't end up kicked out of the game like that guy in the other thread.
