The peace, wonder and glory I find each time trek off in to a woods or across the fields is just so rewarding. At about the 9th pace any thing that had been bothering is long gone. My grandfather hunted all over, all kinds of animals, his passion was squirl and pheasant in the end. I love sitting in a tree stand or standing in the crook of tree waiting for deer. i like even more sitting against a tree well before sunrise on the edge of a field. A chill in the spring air, but still warm enough to smell the damp ground. Its wonderfull to listen tot he woods wake up, then to hear and feel the hammer of gobbler on the prowl for mate...ABsolutLY amazing! Then calling to lure them in and having them gobble back the whole way...it really something. My passion however is game birds, and watching my dog run with an intensity and determination I have never in a person. then locking up mid bound in a statue like pose, where only nostrils flair as they gather scent of a bird...a bird by the way that is big and gaudy beyond belief, that will explode from under foot and a thunder and cackle that will make any persons heart skip several beats.
My daughter started shooting at age 4. She will likely take her first game this season. my son has yet to progress beyond limited BB gun access. Each needs to be a case by case determination. i have nephews who are 10 -18 some of the older ones are less likely to shoot with me than the younger ones.
If yuo really want to hunt with your grandpa, ask...He might like the idea.
I have yet to hunt turkey with a bow, i know lots of folks do in the fall, but here we only have a spring season. i use a 12g and have my gun patterned out 40 yards and make my set ups for about 20.

55, outside of the Urban populated areas of Cal you have some of the absolute best hunting in the country! One of the richest water fowl flyways and strongest Ducks Unlimited chapters in the Nation is in CAlifornia.
Now as far as Big game goes...you state is rich in tradition and history.
What big can you hunt in California.....
Deer, ELK, Big Horn Sheep, Antelop, Boar and BEAR.
As far as bird hunting goes youve got an amazing opurtuntiy as well...you have Rabbit ( which in all honesty is way better than chicken) TURKEY, Sage Grouse, sharptail grouse, Pheasant, Quail, Chukar, Grouse, Ptarmigan, Wild Turkey, Dove, Squirrel, Rabbit.
California used also be home to some of the best Long Range shooting inthe country...I even came out twice for competitions before one of my guns was banned in your state.
Some of the best shooting clubs in the country are right on the outskirts of your cities, Target shooting, skeet, trap, sporting clays, cowboy action...you name CA has clubs and many great instructors as well. Personally i believe that every person should learn early in life about firearms, but they have not, they should at the very least spend a few hours with an instructor and learn and experiece some of what its all about. My wife had never touched a gun in her life, and she grew up around them. when we got married she could not believe the collection I had...a few years later she shot some...she did not like it...some things started happening in her office park that were not so good, she went and took a CCW course and now carries, and continues that training by competitively shooting in the IDPA matches.

I got a bb gun when I was 10, but other than a killing spree of aluminum cans, I haven't done any hunting.

Wow, I had no idea. I should look into some of those clubs. I'm personally interested in some bow hunting, but I'll do it any way I can.

Bow hunting is awesome, requires a lot of practice and loads of patience and good woodsmen skills, youll love it...the compound bows are neat, but a claisc recurve or long bow is my bag.
good source for range in formation
