Here we go!
SHORT: Tigers WIN 5-1
First game was tonight. My team is a combinaton of half our team from last year, and half of the other strongest team. So, I wasn't expecting a lot of shots. But a girl off the Midget AA team dropped down to houseleague this year, and she was on the opposite team. She scored on a mid-height slapshot that tipped in off my glove. I was at the top of my crease and had a player in front screening me. Probably had about 6 shots in the first period, 5 in the second, and 6 in the third. Decent game, but wish I had more shots.
1-0-0

Only have time for a very quick update, I have an essay due tomorrow morning that I only have an outline done.
Tigers win 2-0, first shutout of the season.
My sister came out and got a few decent pictures.
During warm-ups
Making sure my butterfly was closing off the 5-hole
Preparing to drop to my stance

Currently stand at:
GP: 4 (3-1-0)
GA: 6
SO: 1
PIM: 2
And here's some pictures of the 2 goalies that I coach. They had ice time tonight so I went out to give them a hand. The younger one is Amy, who was my original first "student". The one in green is Emily, and this was her first time on the ice.
Teaching how to deflect shots off the blocker and into the safety zone
Teaching the fingers up vs. palm out method, and also to track the puck in vs. watching it with your eyes only

FINALLY BROKE THE COLD STREAK!
Okay, for a short update:
1st game of the season: 5-1 WIN
2nd game: 2-0 WIN
3rd game: 4-2 WIN (the cold streak begins)
4th game: 3-2 LOSS
5th game (tonight): 3-1 WIN
So, the 3rd game wasn't horrible - but the 2 goals they scored were on easy cross-crease passes that I didn't get to, and should have. So that sucked.
4th game... disastrous. Well, we only had 8 skaters plus myself, and we were facing a team of 14 skaters plus a goalie. First goal went 5-hole in the first period. 1-1 after 1 period. 2nd period, they score one where I dropped into the VH on my glove side, and it deflects off my stick and over my shoulder and in. 3rd goal in the 2nd period, girl skates in off the boards to my blocker side, and fires one that sneaks by under my arm. Not too impressive, and I caught a few lucky bounces.
So after that, I dubbed it my cold streak because of 5 GA in 2 games.
Tonight, my two goalie students plus their parents and my sister and my dad all came out to watch. We took on a tough team in our division, with our full team there. The play was probably about 50/50 split. To guess, I'd say I faced about 17-20 shots total. The goal sucked - girl skated behind my net from glove to blocker side, as she comes out I drop to the VH and she passes the puck to a girl almost directly in front of me, who slides it in by the far post before I can extend my leg or slide. That was only the second shot of the game too, so I was immediately like "Oh shit. I'm still on my cold streak".
Amazingly I picked up my game after that point and played steady enough to secure the win. Now our next game isn't until the 22nd, but I'm planning on working with my two students and my sister, and get out to a few public skating sessions so that I don't completely suck the next time I get out there. |

Good Start.
I do see however that in your pic of you checking your 5 hole that pads are not flush to the ice, they are being torqued mostly likely by your skate strap being to tight, or your toe ties, I cant see enough in the pic, you should try to wear that skate a lot looser. _________________

Veej - Yeah, well if you saw my league you'd know why 5 goals in 2 games can be considered a cold streak. My team has decent defence, so when they get past the defence usually the shots aren't all that great and should be stoppable.
R2MN - Which strap exactly? I'll try to get a better picture tonight. I have the one that goes under the last loop in my skate pretty loose, or so I thought. The very top strap is relatively tight, because my reasoning was it pulled my pads more inward and closed off the 5-hole, although I'm aware it's elevating my pads. I'll mess around with them tonight and see if I can fix it up. |

The strap in the back of your skate, loosen it by about 5 notches from where you have it is my guess based on the other pics, or try it in the center about 3 holes from snug. Reason being as you go down and your foot is rotating it is putting pressure on that strap, which in turn is twisting the pad. less noticeable but the mid potion (shin) is also torqued forward and it gets exaggerated at the 5 hole (top of the pad) when in bfly by lifting it off the ice.
I personally do not like the middle hole on the skate, and I wear mine in the heel, on the 6th hole, its very loose but that straps purpose is only to keep the pad from sliding up the leg. It will feel different, but you can reattain the same overall feel of the pad you have now, with no impact on the performance by snuging your lowest calf strap another hole or two as needed, with no impact on pad rotation.
You can see his strap here and how much travel he has in the fly

Thanks R2MN. I'll definitely loosen it up tonight when I'm on the ice. |

Chalk up another win!
4-2 against Crosstown, the team we've beaten the two previous times.
Funny because it was 1-0 for them until about 6 minutes left in the 3rd when we finally found the back of the net.
First goal: Dropped down in the butterfly on the initial shot, rebound directly in front of me. Their girl fires it back, I stop it again but can't hold it. She shoot again, same thing - and still, nobody came over to knock her away, although I should've had the puck at that point. She fires one more, and it goes over my elbow and in.
2nd goal: Our D tries to clear it by firing it up the middle, their D stops it and winds up for a shot. My other D stands RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME! Didn't even have time to look around for the puck, just dropped into the bfly and saw the puck fly by my left skate.
Had a really good second period though - probably had between 10-13 shots, stopped them all. So overall a decent game. |

dont ya love it when your own D's breakout pass is really nothing more than a perfect feed to the opposition? _________________ old broken down end of the road goaler

lol, definitely love it.
So I'm very displeased with my 6K, or maybe my overall catching abilities have been shot. I had 3 easy shots that went glove side - I'm talking nice light floaters, easy to track all the way in... and I only caught 1. One bounced off the edge of the glove and almost rolled in, so I had to dive back and sweep it away. Nice save, but completely unnecessary. Second one I did more of a scoop save so that I wouldn't lose it, and the third one bounced in/out.
We won 7-1 though, and I probably had about 10 shots maximum. Lame game... |

2 game update:
Won 7-1 against a team we had beat 2-0 last time. We really exploded and lit their goalie up, until we started pasing. Their one goal came off a glove side shot from about 2 feet out from me, I dropped and it just kind fluttered by.
Won 3-1 against the team that had beaten us. Sweet, sweet revenge... and their goalie claims one of our girls slammed her stick onto her on our 3rd goal, except there were a few of our parents standing directly behind her net and said nothing like that happened.
Oh, and I was on the ice helping out my two little goalie students, and the midget AA girls normally practice after. Their coach waved me over and asked if I'd like to stay on because they only had one goalie. I said sure, although not knowing how it would go because I haven't played AA in forever (only played for half a season in my first year midgets because their other goalie got injured). It actually showed me I could still play at that level if I took my conditioning to a higher level. I made some nice glove saves, and my rebound control needs work... but again, that's bad habits that have developed through houseleague hockey, where it doesn't show up as much. It was tiring, but hella fun! Wish my school schedule wasn't so hectic so that I could've tried out and potentially played on the Intermediate A squad |

| That's either the smallest 11/12 year old behind the net or someone needs to get the puckboy off the the ice during games. |
