just went over this actually with a progoalie coach, for folks who are going to be coaching various aged goalies.
the idea used to be that for lateral movement (shuffle) you needed a more dull skate, in fact the more dull the better.
The current trend for butterfly goalies is in the area of 1/2 to 3/4. the sharper blades allow the modern goalie when in butterfly, to load and push with out blowing out.
they also allow the goalie to skate harder on the angles.
Some goalies are using Tri-grinds (youllhave to find a person who knows how to it or they will screw up your skate) wherre the front of the blade to just before the ball is at 1/2 or slightly sharper, 3/4 along the middle and back tot he 1/2 for the rear.
The way the sharpen is done is the whole blade starts 3/4 then the other areas are blended. allowing the goalie the best of all worlds ease of shuffle, and traction.
generally for young goalies in their first goalie skates some point of moderation must be reached, so the skill of shuffle can be easily learned, then as they develop the skill the blade can be made sharper, until an equilibrium for the goalie is reached allowing for butterfly and skating controll.
best bet is start abit dull and work up to it. |

I get mine done at 5/8. One guy said 3/4 is best, so I did that, then I got more into butterfly slides, so I figured I'd go sharper. Then I was at 5/8. I figured I'd give 1/2 a try, but it was to sharp for me. Try what you like. _________________

hahaha! I like mine cut at 9/16" but since the stupid pro-filer thing doesn't come in that hollow i'm stuck cutting it at 1/2". But yeah, in response to Lyle's post, 47mm is good for me. _________________ Itech 4.8 Profile C/A

3/8ths, offset, pitched forward, 27" radius.
I had the funky 3 part grind for a few weeks, didn't like it.
I had heard that Kipper is at 3/16ths. Now that is ridiculous! |
