Yeah, that's right. Not only am I no longer a dormant memory on GF, not only am I on a team, it's actually for an entire season!

I got phoned by about 4 different teams in the Calgary area all asking me to play without even knowing how I play which is a good sign. Means I'll never have a problem getting a team.

This year I chose to go with CAHL and a team named Saltwater Cowboys which makes no real sense to me seeing as we're 12 hours from the closest saltwater that I know of...oh well.

Our first game was last Monday. I arrived late at the rink because I had no clue where it was, but so did most of the team so that was ok. Because I arrived late I got dressed late and they started the game without me 6 on 5 to compensate. Right as I got on the ice the other team got a breakaway and scored with me still at the blue line skating towards the net full speed. Ok...not the best way to start a season. My team then went up 5 to 1 with me facing very few shots. Then, they got a 3 on 2 and went right to left with a one timer and when I made the stretch to make the save I pulled my hamstring while they scored. This is why you don't want to show up late..no stretches guarantee's some kind of injury. Anyways, we got out of the first 5-2. When I got down to the other end my hamstring really started to bother me and I was already on dull skates so add those together and I was slower than Chris Osgood allowing 4 goals to go in and tying the game at 6. My team recovered and we went on to win 7-6.

All in all my team is strong, good skaters with some wicked shots and apparently our best players weren't even there last week so we'll see tonight when we face the team that won 17-8 last week how we really are.

Anyways, here's a picture of a save from the game which I had the satisfaction of at least not allowing a single rebound goal:

If I didn't know where the rink was, and who the new team was I would have left 2 hours before the game to make sure I got there with plenty of time. Smile But I'm eager like that.

The rink was about 15 minutes east of Banff. I had to drive an hour into calgary then another 30 minutes past to get to it. Edge Pro School or some crap. Way out in BFE...no bueno.

I'm still using the Rbk Xpulse 6.0 until my Brian's Dx2 comes in.

Anyways, I played another game last night against a team that won their first game 17-8 which wasn't a comforting thought walking into the rink. We lost 14-5 but that's not even the worst part. About 5 minutes into the first period I aggravated the strain to my hamstring and by the end of the second it was so bad I couldn't even butterfly slide and I was unable to recover after going into a butterfly so after I gave up 9 goals in my weakened state we had one of the forwards throw on my gear and finish out the period. He gave up 5 which is why we lost 14-5. In our defense, the team we played could easily be in Division A and still win most of their games and they're just riding it out in Division B so they can run up their stats.

As for my Hamstring, I spoke to my neighbor who's a physical therapist and she said that it's definitely a strain and if I play on it again before it heals up (which is 4-6 weeks) I could tear it and put myself out for the entire season. So, two weeks into the first season I've ever gotten to play I'm now benched for 6 weeks. Awesome.

I tore the hamstring in my right leg last year. Tears are graded 1-3 (3 being the worst). Mine was a 2/3. I followed the advice of my doc and went to a sports physio right away. Treatment was massage, a TENS machine, ultra-sound massage and strength training. I went back to playing after about 6 weeks, only to do a secondary tear - a #1 this time, so much less serious.

I credit the sports physio in getting me back on the ice in relatively short order after both injuries and remaining injury free (at least hamstring-wise). My suggestion: don't assume this can heal quickly on its own and without further complication. Get checked out.

I stretched as much as possible, but with 10 minutes gone of a 15 minute stop time period and our net empty there's not much you can do. The thing that really gets me though is I've almost never really put much effort into stretching aside from a few stretches I've done over the years before playing and this is the worst injury I've had since I had a partial tear to my ACL 10 years ago. All in all a crappy way to start the season. I have to sit at home and watch our teams stats without being an active participant in the forming of them.

As far as going to the Doctor, I'd LOVE to...but currently can't because I'm not Canadian so I have no health card Crying or Very sad

It's been four weeks. Not entirely sure if my leg has healed completely and against advice from our next door neighbor who just happens to be a sports physician I'm stepping back onto the ice tomorrow. It's one of the better teams in our league, but assuming the judgment is based off tears and not strains, then I think I should be fine. I can't stand sitting at home looking at my equipment every day and not playing anymore, I have to get back out there.

I'll let y'all know how I do when I get home. And of course, my first game back happens to be at that rink clear on the other side of Calgary an hour away from me. At least this time I know where it is.

Outstanding night back in net tonight. 6-2 loss. Gave up one shorthanded goal, stopped 2 3-1s and 2 breakaways. Other team just flat out outplayed us. Tied together with my extremely out of conditioned performance and bam, 6-2 loss to the number one team in the league.

Oh well, leg is healthy, and there's always next week.
