Arth - Maybe I'm blind, I don't remember seeing NHL goalies doing that And in your sig it looks like you're more in half butterfly, and (like Slinky said) about to pokecheck.
Slinky - I can barely do the splits, and my "falling backwards" comment was referring directly to that. I never try the splits in a game situation, so i never end up on my a$$. |

Then you're not watching enough hockey on TV. I was specifically watching them for this yesterday. I counted 4 times Khabiboulin did it. 6 times Hiller did it, and about 2 that Nabby did when he wasn't missing the beach ball flying past him.
As for the sig picture, it's hard to see exactly what I'm doing, because the guy was on a fast breakaway so obviously I was moving quickly. Technically I dropped to a full butterfly and was kicking left to full splits while my stick was transitioning to paddle down. If you look at it you'll see what I'm talking about.
**EDIT**And it's not half butterfly because believe it or not, both my legs are flush with the ice...god I love being tall. |

I'll be honest. I only really watch NHL games when it's Nashville playoffs. Or the highlights. |

| You know...one of the BEST ways to improve your game is to watch the way multiple pros play the game. See what works for them, what doesn't then watch yourself play (videos which you have a plethora of) and think about what you saw them do and try and work it into your game on ice. I mean, these guys are making thousands more a year then any of us ever will...why not try and imitate what they do? It really does help. |

+1 to arth's comment. even brodeur watches other pro's to try and help his own game out. _________________ Because it hurts so good.

Does anyone else use paddle down on breakaways if the shooter fakes and goes to your right? I find good shooters try and do that a lot and I get caught going down in the butterfly, and as I don't play on ice its hard to slide in their direction. So I usually put my stick on the floor in their direction. I know it probably seems like a desparation move but I've done it so often and it works so I haven't tried to change.
Also, is the VH position where you stack up against the goal post when shooters are coming from the angle between the left and right face off circles? _________________ A goalie must have one overriding quality, he must want to be a goalie |

Goes to my right as in behind me? Yes...I use it to seal the ice if I think he's going to try and float it in. Goes to my right as in moving that way? No, I kick out the pad and leave my blocker elevated to try and create more stopping area vs. double stopping area on the ice.
The VH is named as such because one pad is Vertical, the other Horizontal on the ice. The Vertical being against the post. Vertical+Horizontal(-ertical+orizontal)=VH. It's a nice thing to have in your arsenal as it does seal off the lower half of the net from one-timers in the slot and still sealing off the post. |

Yeah those kind of shifty moves that they try and slowly move around you if you lose pace with the skater. I guess its a kind of move if they try and get real close too. I try and kick out the leg but can't slide ( I play inline hockey on sports court) very well. I'll work on it though.
In the VH what do you do if the puck is passed out into the slot area? _________________ A goalie must have one overriding quality, he must want to be a goalie |

On ice, you can butterfly slide over which is what I do 99% of the time... or if you work your legs enough, it only takes about a second to bounce up and t-push over to be in your stance.
Arth - the only hockey on TV I like is replays from mine or my sister's games |

I played college roller hockey. If you're in the VH and they pass, you're pretty screwed. On ice you push off with the vertical leg into a butterfly slide. On roller, you would have to stand up and move out. You can use the VH if you've read an obvious shot, or the guy doesn't have anyone to pass to, and he's on the goal line and has no angle. Otherwise, you're better off just standing up against the post and hugging it. _________________ Because it hurts so good.

Yeah I have tried the VH in practice and got burned, a lot.
I realise inline hockey (as we prefer to call it here) isn't real ice hockey, but its the closest damned thing I've got. Its not any less manly to play, unless you count the lighter puck, less hitting, 4v4... nevermind. _________________ A goalie must have one overriding quality, he must want to be a goalie |

Dude, I'm just bugging. I played rollerhockey for 10 years. I was the lead scoring defenseman cause I could slapshot that thing in to the top corner from the blue line every time. I think it's harder to be an inline goalie cause you don't have the option to slide etc. |

Yeah dude tell me about it. you go down and all you can do is the mad slow shuffle or flail limbs around. Or half get up and try and do a semi T-slide _________________ A goalie must have one overriding quality, he must want to be a goalie |
