Hi,
I'm a goalie one time a week and I have observed that players begin to copy NHL players and drive the net more and more. It begins to bug me a little bit. Sometimes I can't even get out of my crease.
I tried playing physical too but it gets worse. I loose focus and the players get more and more in the way. I tried to ignore it but because I'm not a big goalie, sometimes it costs me litteraly a goal where I was pushed of the way.
Last game, I totally lost it and slashed the player in the legs and tipped of his helmet of his head with my stick. After that, the game got chippy and I couldn't concentrate or even play because the crease was too crowded.
So my question is: is there a way or technique to help goalie protect themselves from players driving the net? Also, is there a way to make players understand that it's frustrating?
Thank you for your answers. |

yeah thats a good question, why has no one commented.
I would think my D should step up the roughness a little and protect you. Get them to take care of the outside of the crease and let you focus on the puck |

To be honest with you, if the players are pushing you around in the crease, you should point it out to the ref during a stoppage in play. It's goaltender interference and something they're not allowed to do according to the rules.
If the ref doesn't do anything about it, nail them in the legs with your stick. The back of the knees works good because it will generally knock them down. It also works to hook their skates and pull them down. If that doesn't work, go Hextall on them. _________________

Hmmm yeah I do enjoy the good ole stick between the legs and pull! or a nice hard cross check to the lower back so that it knocks them off balance!
But those are last resorts for sure! |

Thanks for the tips.
I tripped the guy like you said three times in the game but he did not understand and he continued to back up into me*. The ref does nothing that makes me more mad. Actually, he's the dad of Daniel Briere. I'm from where he lived younger in Quebec.
So for my problem, if I follow your advices, I should focus more or step up the violence to make them understand.
Thanks again for the replies, and if people have other things to say on the subject, on how you handle net crashing, you are welcome.
*I'm french so i dont know if back up into me is the way to say it |

Yeah "back into you" is correct.
I think if you get too involved with the violence you will loose your game! I think you need to have a fine line between! and get your D guys to clear the net. Obviously keep your focus on the puck and player movements and dont let the guy in yoru crease put you off your game!
Get your D to step up the voilence on these guys! |

i agree you can't let the crowding throw off your game, but at the same time you have to realize that the person crowding/crashing the net is one slip away from falling on you. If you happen to be in the down position that can lead to bad knee injuries.
Let your team know its bugging you and tell them to clear them away from you, my team knows it and they clear.
If someone is stubborn and/or crashes the net after i make a save. Then don't be afraid to stand up for yourself, let them know its not okay to do that. |

thanks again for the answers.
I found that focusing on the puck more helps for tips and screens. In fact it helps with my overall game. It's logic to watch the puck, but focusing truly and intensively a 100% of the time is more difficult. I think when you succesfully do that, that's when you get in the zone.
For net crashing, i used your advices and i just push the player in front so I can see the puck. If they interfere, I talk to the referee and my defensman. Finally, the most important thing, I KEEP MY COOL.
Thanks again everyone |

if they are backing up into you keep your stick on the ice and simply wedge it into the rear of their blades with blocker arm straight forward, dont lower your blocker and slide the stick cause it will look malicious..keep your blocker up and it will look defensive...
i was good for pokes with my stick in the inner knees, and upper inside thigh/ballsack area..... lower rear calfs just above skate are good as well...
but that was 20 years ago... |

I agree with what you guys are saying. I think it's pretty unfair that the opposition does this without any reprocussions. I play in a men's ball hockey league and its mainly 18+ players so it can get pretty rough. If players from the opposition start to invade my crease, I usually give them a "gentle love tap". Be advised that by doing so, you can expect a reaction by either referee or the player. For example, last night I kept getting players crowding my crease. I was getting pretty fed up with the referees not doing anything about it so the next time it happened, I decided to place my stick between his legs and turn it so that when he went to go with the play, he tripped. Of course I added a little jerk when he started to run haha. Once I did that, he turned around and slashed me in the pads pretty hard. Guess who got the penalty? Not the guy who was "adjusting his stick" _________________ Scoring wins fans, but goaltending wins championships |

The Bruins had fought back from a 2-0 third-period deficit and a goal at that point would have been crushing to the Black and Gold. It would have given the Sabres back not only the lead but also, more importantly, the momentum. But even when he looked a bit out of position, the man now known as "Tuukkool" Rask was there to make the stop -- and his teammates and coach wouldn't have expected anything less.
