So maybe there was a thread in there already, but i didn't find it so I decided to start this one
Ok so how do you guys play a penalty shot? Does your style change at all, what do you think and how do you react?
I get out really high, like between the hash marks and top of the circle and then match their speed in, maybe a little bit faster. As the shooter gets close, depending on how they're holding the puck either pokecheck (works well on players who don't know me, but the few i play against that do are usually ready for it) or drop my shoulder and feint a pokecheck. Generally that works pretty well because either it gets the shooter to take a bad shot right into me or wide, or make a weak move thats easy to stop. er im sure theres more to it, but thats kinda what I notice. |

Well considering the league I've played in for the past 3 seasons has basically the same girls, I've just learned to know what they're going to do. A lot of girls will shoot no matter what, so I play out extra high and back up slower, forcing them to try and deke (which they don't). This one girl constantly fakes blocker side then goes glove side, so I don't even react to the fake anymore.
I think overall though I do the same thing, except I barely ever use the poke check. Out nice and high, and butterfly slide is my main move... except when they're coming in off the blocker side on a breakaway, if they cut through the crease normally I end up butterfly sliding/falling forwards in the splits at the same time and snagging it just over my pad.
Ooo, that gives me a great idea. At the spring ice I'm helping out, there's this coach who always dekes on me when there's no action, but he moves lightning fast (or I'm just SUPER slow) and scores nearly all the time. I'll try to get my sister to video tape some of it, even if it'll be a while until I can upload to YouTube. |

I stopped a 50 goal scorer on a breakaway recently. I knew he was real good, so I figured he was going to deak, so he started out on my blocker side, I knew he was going to the glove side. So I just followed him and put out the leg in to his shot. The bench went freaking nuts cause they knew who he was.
Patience is key. |

I like to play out a bit father than usual during a breakaway/penalty shot (a stride away from the hash marks). I try to go a bit slower than the player coming in on me so they get close to me, I try to get them to come close enough so that they feel like they have to make a deke, then I just follow them across and try to get part of my body infront of it.
I'm glad the pokecheck works for you in 1-on-1's. I read somewhere that a goalie only has a 1 in 3 chance of stopping a breakaway/penalty shot with a pokecheck. _________________ Height: 6'1
