Sorry in advance people!, but i need a place to vent and i need help and some encouragement on how to get better.
I've been starting to play goalie for just abit under 3 years now. I have really low self esteem when it comes to my playing, i live in a town of about 11,000 and we only have one arena. There are only 3 goalies in town and they always critize me on my play because they have like 10 years of expierence. I can't slide as much as they do but i can push off with my right skate to slide left when on the ground but when i try push off with my left skate i just twirl in a circle. I can't slide and get back up right away (like slide side to side and lift my leading leg back up). I have really good positioning and i'm very fast on my glove and stick side. I can skate side to side good. When i play against those other goalies, i do very good and they just say i had a good team. I do play on teams but we hardly go on tournaments. The reason why i have self esteem problems is about my playing is because i'm on the heavyier side and they always call me down on it.They always piss me off cause there spoiled brats and get there parents to buy there shit, unlike me i bought all my stuff with money i earned
So what i'm trying to ask is that, do you guys ever see any chubby goalies?
i am getting really discouraged to stop playing in net, but i have improved way more then last year. Any advice and words of encouragement?
I am 18 and 6'1 @ 210. |

I don't know what to say. Sounds like you're in a situation with some snotty little kids. There are plenty of heavier goalies out there, so don't worry about that (not that 6'1" is bad at all). As far as ability goes, they come off sounding like dorks for criticizing someone who's got so much less experience. Grown men don't do that sort of thing, thank god.
It's probably not what you want to hear, but you're just going to have to deal with it until a) you get better, b) they grow up, or c) the personnel situation changes. If you ask me, the worst people to be around are teenage boys in a group. If you take them out of the group, they"re usually fine as individuals, but put 'em together, and they're just rotten little sh*ts. I'll bet that once one of the other two guys is out of the picture (moves away, for example), the situation will improve drastically.
Good luck, and keep your chin up and your butt down. |

6'1" 210 is a decent weight...
Antero Nittymaki - 6'1" 210
Antti Niemi - 6'2" 215
Thomas Greiss - 6'1" 210
Jonathan Quick - 6'1" 212
Jimmy Howard - 6'0" 210
Nikolai Khabibulin - 6'1" 206
Tim Thomas - 5'11" 201
And a couple of non-goalies just for fun
Patrick Marleau - 6'2" 220
Ryane Clowe - 6'2" 225
Jamal Mayers - 6'1" 215
Douglas Murray - 6'3" 240
Imagine what would happen if someone called ol' Dougie fat I agree with Butters... sounds like some jerky kids just trying to rattle you. Just practice and work hard and you should be fine. If you love what you're doing it shouldn't matter what other people say or think. I know that's easier said than done, but just try to have fun, because unless you're getting paid millions of dollars to play which I'm guessing you aren't... then why do it if it's not fun?? Good luck |
