Hi all,
First post here, so please excuse any mistakes
I'm 23, and I played defense for about 8 years when I was younger. Got out of that for a while and decided to start playing Road Hockey and didn't have a goalie so I stepped in, went to good 'ol canuck-tire and bought myself a set (even tried it on in store haha) played for a few months and my dad's league needed a goalie so I volunteered and he even had most a set for me...
Ran into an opportunity to buy some new gear, and was asked if I wanted it "Full Right" or "Regular" and I just noticed my Road Hockey gear is Full right and my ice hockey gear is Regular...
They both seem perfectly comfortable to me, but my question is:
Is there any major advantage or disadvantage to playing Full Right?
The only thing I can think of that would be a bigger advantage to me is I naturally shoot Right handed... |

| Can you play the puck with both hamds? or just the right hand and usually full right would be comfortable if you shoot right handed. My advice would be to try and get a demo with the equipment you want and see if you would rather play the puck or not |

Full-Right and Regular goalies have the same mental effect on players that a right handed or left handed pitcher would have in baseball. There is a bit of a shock to most players, particularly beer leaguers who have the natural tendency to shoot high right on the net which would normally be high glove.
Aside from mentality of skaters, I'd suggest going with whichever one is most comfortable and familiar to you. |

Finally a post about a catching with the right hand!
Other than some confusion by shooters who might not be acclimated to a person who catches with the right hand, there was no distinct advantage I had being "that way". I suggest that you go with the way that is easiest for you and if you are comfortable catching either way, go with the one where you dont have to turn yourself inside out to pass a puck. _________________ old broken down end of the road goaler

| The only advantage left catching goalies have is the benefit of finding equipment easier. And they're even starting to break that down now. |

FINALLY!!!!
I am the father of a first year Squirt House Goalie who is making the tough transistion from skating Foward to Goaltending. He is a natural right handed shot, even as an American plays almost NO baseball so no real glove catching preference there, and even though all of the folks around here keep telling us to make him a left handed catcher... Meanwhile he can not stickhandle or shoot left handed to save his life.
So I just took the leap and found a good set of Itech RX5 Jr's on clearence at Goaliemonkey and snatched them up. Tonight is his first practice with his new mitts. He and I are both very excited about the whole thing. The gloves arrived two days ago, so yesterday we went to our local decent pro shop, Mckie's and got him a 24" full right stick to complete the experiment. I can't wait for tonight...
Anyway, as a kid in the 70's I was taught that a goalie should catch with his domiment hand for better shooting and stick control. And that catching with your domiment hand will give you a good fast snatch-it glove hand which any goalie would want. So, my son and I met this nice young adult goalie in our area who works at a local used equipment store and catching with your domiment hand was his suggestion as well. He told us that Martin Bouder's dad made him catch with his domiment hand since he was very young (left in his case) because he shot left as a player and this was much more comfortable for him.
Well if that is true, even this NY Ranger fan has to give that Devil his due with 215 shut-outs and stick skills so stong that the NHL has written a new set of rules based on his stick handling. I mean clearly the proof is in the pudding.
So my son and I want to know, if you have a new young goalie who has a clear stick handling, shoot preference strength and weakness, ala Natural right handed shot, verses natural left handed shot, does it make sense not to fight mother nature, and just go with it instead of first trying to train him out of it??? As a man who once played guitar I knew a number of lefties, and the ones that seemed the most comfortable and fluid were the ones who spent the extra cash, and went thru the hastle of finding guitars set up to play, backwards, left handed so the bridges and controls, cut aways were all opposite so they could just be themselves instead of fight their own internal born with tendencies....
Lastly, I wonder if this catch left as a righty thing, is some silly US American thing because of the over abundence of baseball and guys learning to play in the street with their left handed, right hand player, baseball mitts.
Anyway, my son and I are very excited to see what happens this weekend with three practices in four days... Wish him luck with me...

I always shot right and when I started playing goalie I got recomended to stick with a right shot and catch right. It worked out great for me, I burowed a friends gloves once to trie regular but I could not shot the puck to save my life, it was quit pathetic actualy . I've always had a realy good glove hand, might have somthing to do with my right hand being dominant. But defenetly if catching right is more comforteble go for it . _________________ No guts, No glory
