| This is just to introduce myself, not really to ask any questions (yet). I'm 54 years old (yes 54). I played some ice and street hockey as a kid, and always had the desire to 'get out there' when I started watching/coaching my kids in roller hockey. One day they had a scrimmage and needed a goalie. I put on some used equipment the rink had laying around and had an absolute blast. Note: They let me play in my gym shoes. I've since played in quite a few pick-up sessions with the men and done fairly well, although I would not say I'm good enough for a league. I have fun trying and to them I'm better than an empty net. That said, I'm trying to learn a bit of skating. Roller skating after 35 years is hard enough but it's also much different than ice skating, especially the moves a goalie has to make. I work on it in scrimmages and in my basement a bit and if I can progress enough I'd love to play. My son just turned 18 and is ready for an adult league. It would be a dream come true to play with him. Anyway, I've ready some of the posts here and love the welcome feeling and the valuable information. I never thought in detail about goaltending but there's obviously a lot of thought that goes into it. I was the skinny kid that the big guys used to make stand in front of the net as they took slap shots at me. I've grown a bit and am in pretty good shape for my age. I'd love to take on some of them now. I've said a bit much here but it just shows my excitement. Hello to all. I look forward to talking with and learning from you. |

Newbie is a slang term for a novice or newcomer, or somebody inexperienced in any profession or activity. Contemporary use can particularly refer to a beginner or new user of computers, often concerning Internet activity, such as online gaming. It can have derogatory connotations, but is also often used for descriptive purposes only, without a value judgment.
The term's origin is uncertain. Earliest uses probably date to late twentieth century U.S. military jargon, though possible precursor terms are much earlier. Variant forms of the noun include newby and newbee, while the related term noob (often spelt n00b) is often used in online gaming.
