Recently I returned to playing goalie on ice after about an eight year break. Last night was my first practice and I thought it went pretty well. But anyhow, I noticed some knee pain during and after practice. It essentially felt like I banged my knee against something; more specifically the lower inside part of my right knee. In butterfly I suppose you do kind of bang your knee on the ice, but I was wondering if this is a common occurrence and perhaps there is some flaw in my butterfly causing it? The padding of my left and right knees is equal so I don't think it's that and I have no previous injuries on the knee. Any ideas? Thanks!
(P.S. Thought this could fit in this forum but if mods feel the need to move it, please do.) |

What type of pads are you using? Does the landing gear have your knee centred when it's strapped up?
Did a puck hit you between the padding? I've had that happen.
Is the pain like a bruise? |

With my old RBKs the pad would sometimes move so my knee was directly hitting the ice when I went down. Maybe thats whats happening? You would probably have a bruise if this was the case. _________________

I'm using used Vaughn V3. I've got no bruise or even pain when applying pressure (a little drunk now, but ) just 24 hours later. I know my knee is not making direct contact with the ice but I didn't notice if it was centered or anything. I'll look out closer next time. Thanks for the responses. |

your knee should be snug in the knee cradle.

Anybody else think that it may be an MCL strain? Those are very common among goalies, especially goalies that haven't played in quite some time and try to do too much. _________________ 6'1" 185 lbs.

Im whit the above mcl...have you been stretching, staying in shape, or did you just drag a$$ over and jump right back in? Your 8 years older, and 8 years removed likely form that kind of exertion.
I have at times, being an older guy neglected my work outs and stretching and been reminded by my body that that is not a good idea. _________________

I noticed it still at my last practice but definitely not to the extent as before. I have been stretching some in preparation for getting back on the ice, but I know not as much as I should.
Does it seem like a bad idea to be playing or should I just be paying a little closer attention? |

no not a bad idea, the bad thing is, your mind remember how the body used to play, and needs to get used to the new body. It will come together. _________________

Yeah, thanks for the replies. It will definitely take some time to readjust, but in the meantime I'll just keep a close eye on it and do my stretches. |

This sounds very similar to the same situation I had when I started back up again. To think of it, I think I started playing after 8 years off as well. I went out to play some shinny and all was going well until I went down in butterfly as the player was coming across the net and felt a sharp pain in my knee. After going to the ER after 2 weeks of ignoring it and hoping it would heal on its own (I was stupid) I was told that I probably tweaked the cartiledge in my knee. Doc told me to stay off it for a week and placed me in a full leg brace and gave me crutches. It sucked and has taken a while to get back to full health. I've been playing ball hockey since May and have had occasional pain but it's nothing compared to what it was before. _________________ Scoring wins fans, but goaltending wins championships |

| Sounds like a strained medial meniscus. Rest, ice. Not a big deal. If you continually play on a strained meniscus however you risk tearing, pinching ect. This will cost you some time. Just be careful with it, dont be too aggressive, if it hurts dont play. Rest up and it will go away fast. |
