Make sure you keep your stick on the ground and drive your knees together, the farther apart they are the bigger your 5-hole is. Are you wearing your pads loose enough? If they're too tight, you won't get the right amount of rotation.

When you sit back in your butterfly you're going to get scored on every time. It's obvious. But a ton of goalie do it. _________________

yeah, erect your upper body in the butteryfly, like fs said. it is more helpful, plus you take up more of the net _________________

Before I went to a goaltending school I had a lot of major problems with butterfly. I was always getting scored on high and always seemed like the player could just skate around me and shoot through me. When i took the lessons right away the instructor was like ok well i have alot of work. He showed me how to hold my glove and blocker, the way my stick should be, butterfly sliding, c cuts and t pushes, rotating my body into butterfly slide, crawls, and anything i wanted to know better. I was always sitting back on my ass when i went down but now that i have been taught to stay up i have been alot more square, alot bigger and it is actually easier to move around when in butterfly. My advice for anyone having difficulty in net is to spend a few bucks and go for a private goalie session...It helped me...just my 2 cents _________________ |

If you're doing it right then you shouldn't be getting scored on, on the first shot, anyways. To keep good position, just keep your belly button sqaure with the shooter until he does shoot, it's a simple way to remember and stay sqaure. You have to stay as big as possible, chest up, shoulders up, everything. And once you have the staying large down, you need to seal up as many holes as possible. Most of the newer pads will cover your 5-hole for you, but that is pretty much a back up plan, the stick still needs to be at a slight angle, it can ramp the pucks into your stomach and it will be ready to direct it to the corner. Keep your legs out as far as possible while still keeping your 5 hole closed, it's better not do have a narrow butterfly. You need to come out, too, which is a big problem for most goalie where the pucks go sailing over their shoulders. You can take away the entire top of the net when you come out far enough, and when they lift it, you should easily get a piece of it. It's usually judgement on how far out you should be, it will usually hit you if you're way to far in the crease or a ridiculous amount out. If you can get a good butterfly, it can take away some of the need for reflex.
Also, another misconception...There are different ways to hold your gloves when in the butterfly. When a player is coming in, probably past the top of the circle or more, you gloves should be up a little above your hips and out in front of you, should you need to catch it or stop it why your blocker. And the second way, is when there's a player up at the blue line and you have a screen in front of you, your gloves should be low, below the hips, pretty much on the top of your pads. You need to seal up any low holes. When there's a screen, the D man is going to shoot low, looking for a tip. So you the idea is you keep your gloves low so you don't you don't let a tip go thru a space you're giving. If you have your gloves up, the tip could go straight through your side and inside arm before you can react. _________________

best advice i ever got was "Make the first save." Nobody can blame you if you make the first save then it goes in on a rebound. Just keep practicing your butterfly. Ask one of the players to shoot five hole all the time so you can work on it in real situations. _________________
