hi,
I play flybrid style goal-tending. Yesterday i went to drop-in for the first time in months, and found myself being constantly beat high glove. I was taught to go down on every shot, as soon as the puck leaves the tape i go down. My biggest asset is my five hole, because i can close it real fast. So i give them the 5-hole and during games, most people shoot there. But at drop-in everyone goes for the winners and shoots high. So when i go down, they beat me high. What can I watch to see if the shooter will shoot high or low? Could it be that my reflexes weren't as high since I haven't been working on them or playing for a month or two? Please give me input. Thanks guys. |

You shouldn't be going down as soon as the puck leaves the tape. Why on Earth you would do that is beyond me. It only takes a couple of shots for shooters to pick up on that and roof it high, even if you try to tempt them into going 5-hole.
Start standing up more and really focussing on where the shot is headed, rather than automatically giving them full rights to the top of the net.
Whip out a tennis ball, stand a few feet from the wall, get somebody to stand behind you and throw the ball off the wall. You'll have to react to it that much faster.
Funny story, I did that last night and got pegged 3 times in the mouth because I wasn't reacting fast enough. But eventually you'll get the hang of it. |

Reminds me of a really old really lame game where the 'master' would say "You're blocking with your head again" everytime you took a hit to the head. Unfortunately on occasion I have taken to heading the puck, not the smartest thing to do, I know. _________________ Efe

see a lot of shots. eventually you'll learn to tell instinctively where a shot is going to go based on the blade angle, the follow through, release point, shoulders... and then you'll be able to link those things to earlier movements that a player makes. once you've finally seen a shooter enough times, you'll be able to tell where he wants to shoot long before he ever gets ready to shoot. it's pretty amazing all the little tells you can learn to pick up on without even thinking about them.
anticipation will help a lot. if you let a goal or two high glove, then you should anticipate that and adjust where you're holding your glove and you'll be ready for those saves. _________________ Because it hurts so good.

Keep your hands higher, in front of you and stay on the top of the blue paint. If you are not below 5'9 you can easily make high saves too on ice if you don't drop your hands too early. Sounds like it is just a matter of what kind of stance you have and how you keep your hands when you do down. Lot of times it is not even necessary to stay up on high shots if your hand work well.

Ha took me about that many times to figure it out as well lol that drill really worked for me. I had the same problem my glove side is my weakest and it took a while for me to figure it out. But when I did the boys could no longer get a goal by going high on my glove side

| the best advice i have to offer is dont drop until they take the shot, if its a break away and they're real close to you then its fine if you drop but snipers will see you drop and take advantage of it. next, make sure that when and if you drop that your gloves dont move from there position when your on your skates, any decent player will pick that up as well and try to pick you up high when your glove drops. |
