I'm new to goaltending (7 months experience). I was wondering how sharp a goaltender keep their skates. I like to butterfly slide and was wondering if I should have my skates sharp or dull? A friend of mine told me to sharpen them at 1/2? any advice? Oh yeah and I was advised not to get a "goalie cut"?
Thanks, when answering the question I would appreciate you stating how sharp your goalie skates are ... THANKS |

I also get mine cut at 1/2...
but then I dull them out.
Unfortunately this is going to become a personal preference debate. But to make it sort of general, the sharper you have your skates, the easier the butterfly slide will be. I have my skates relatively dull and still slide just fine. _________________

| I had to get mine sharpened the other day by Sportchek, and the guy did them at 1"... I hated it. Is 1" supposed to be sharp? Because these became completely dull after 2 ice times of goalie instructing. Basically no movement on my part, just to demonstrate drills, and do some skating. |

| 1" is pretty dull actually. Generally goalie cut is likea 5/8, sharp enough to keep an edge, but is easy to shuffle with since its not a deep cut. I think with profly becoming so prevalant, i think 1/2 is pretty good since most goalies to bfly slide to get across the net. |

how sharp a goalie has thier skates is a personal thing that is dependent on few key factors.
1. height and weight, the biger you are the less sharp you skate needs to be to have the same effect. Is there an exact ratio for it, not that I know of, but do know that at 260lbs and 6'3" if I played on a 1/2 it would be like wearing a stake knife, yep Ive tried it to.
2. Skating ability, the stronger you are as a skater the sharper you can go because you have more developed ability
3. A more dull blade will make it easier for new goalie to shuffle (age and ability dependent) and learn this key skill.
4. A sharp blade will allow a more developed goalie to push in the butterfly.
The only other factor is ice condidtions, in summer when ice is not as hard as winter go with a more dul radius to maintain the same controll on the softer surface. _________________
