Beginner Tender and would like a tip on how to defend a player coming across on me.

Last night a player was coming from the left boards and he was coming across on me. He was around the bottom half of the circle.
I didnt know how to defend it. I came out a little to poke check and cover the near post and he burned me and just went around me.

Then the second time same scenario and this time I anticipated him to go around me. But instead he put it glove side(regular) in this big gap I just left open cause i wanted to make sure he didn't burn me again.

Granted there was no defense and he just walked in. I still would like to know how to stop this or develop some sort of effective block on it.

I dont know how to defend when players start to come across. How do i ensure not to get beat glove side and prevent them from just burning me and going around.

Thanks

You need to focus on his location, don't move to poke check when you've got the post angle covered. As he starts to go around you, follow him. You have to have patience one on one. It's damn hard, but you have to be read for him to make the move and not make the save until he starts to shoot.

sounds like a "drive-by" right? comes low across the crease for a shot right? my advice is hug the post either standup or in vh (if you butterfly) and wait for the shooter to close the gap, and as they move across the crease, use the post to anchor your push, and butterfly-slide following his movement. Stand tall and get out far enough to cut down angle. These shots are always a little tricky to play.
