I play goalie in a novice (adult) league. People who have never or barely played before. I fit in well as a goalie ( i have played out for 10+yrs. but new in net)
Is this is problem for any other novies league goalies??!!
The warm-up is horrible! All they do is deke and deke and deke. I have told them hundres of times. " Start bu giving me some distance shots to (a) warm me up, (b) let me get my sight, (C) make sure the gear is adjusted right (d) let me get my angles!
They don't listen! I know why. They don't have type of shots, no wrist shot, no snap shot no nothing...........so they just keep doping this painfully slow 15-deke breakaway drills. It makes them feel good to slip one in I guess, but now they have a blind goalie (whom they will blame later-on in the game for allowing goals.
Incidentally, none of them have the hands to make that kind of play in a game with defenseman anyway...........but its all they do during warm-ups!
I ahve gone as far to stand up and skate out of the crease once they cross the hash marks and I realize they going to deke it, it deson't phase them.
I had a goalie tell me one time " this is my warm-up, not yuors don't cross the circles"
At least not at first and not exclusively.
Maybe we are all just looking for confindence before the game.
Any thoughts???
ps. I am a better spellerthan typist, not to mention this stupid overtype! How do I turn it off? _________________ after I became a goalie, I quit celebrating goals as a foward out of humility and respect |

Yeah, I hate too when they on a warm-up shoot from a distance about 1 inch But I told them to shoot at the first 2 drills from far away. Some players agree, some not _________________

I just need to get the feel of the puck, some people like to take the entire warm up like the a goalie on my HS team, but after a few minutes I'm good _________________

The warm up isnt for them to get their dekes going, but to get their legs moving. So its really for the goalie. My coach tells them to shoot at the goalie and shoot above or at the hash marks. Then we do a walk in drill, into a flow, into a 2 on 1 flow, into a 3 on 2, into walk in. _________________

I had a guy do that to me on Monday night. He took a hard shot that hit the edge of my pad when I was turned around getting a drink. I took the puck and shot it right back at him, hitting him in the back of his leg as he turned to skate away. When he turned back around I told him next time I'd take his damn head off. _________________

I think my players are smart enough to not do that, but if they try I'll just take them down _________________ That's what she said!

yeah ive played for a bunch of teams that do that same stuff.. ill tell them to set up the half moon and if the dont within 1 or 2 times of me asking ill just go to the side and do additional streaching.. and as for breaks in warmups when they come in i just stand straight up and dont move figuring they might get the point even tho they dont.. i actually really pissed off my old team before a huge game they wouldnt set up so i just streached the whole time and told them i get more out of streaching than there usless warmup.. especially when warmup last maybe 5 min.. when you play for good teams you shouldnt have to say anything.. so just keep playing and improving and you wont have that problem.. |

I agree completely. the lower level teams try to use the warmup as a substitute for all of the practice that they've missed. I'm willing to work out on their approaches at practice or pickup, not before the game. It's not a machine-gun shootout for the skaters. I usually get the point across to the team by skating around dekers early in the warmup to face the people shooting good shots to warm me up. Matador them a few times and they'll get it quick. i played my first game with a new team last night at a higher level than I've been playing and didn't have to say a damned thing.
it is just ignorance if they do that anyways. Agreed. |
