For the past few weeks we have been traveling into a near by city on the weekends to visit a goalie instructor. I have faith in the instructor as he is a consultant to a couple WHL teams and one NHL team. As well I can see the improvement in my sons basics during the time spent with him.
At his local teams practice he seems to have forgotten what he has learned and seems back to square one.
It frustrates me (which it shouldn't) but I love the little guy and realize that playing hockey is for fun and I am not one of those parents who is banking my retirement on his NHL contract.
I am just hoping that he is having fun, but at the same time playing to the best of his ability. I chalk it up to him having a bad day and being off like the rest of us when our minds are elsewhere.
The situation I am in now as the coach of his team and have full faith in him, but when he doesn't try or perform to his ability level is starting to make it not fun for him and hence me. I am planning to be the Tim's drinking parent and distance myself from coaching him next year in an attempt to renew both of our love for the game.
One hurdle that he has to over come is that he is concerned that if he uses the butterfly too much, he will become tired throughout the game and will not be able to perform in the 3rd period. It is hard for me to explain to a 9 year old that in practice is where we learn and improve our conditioning.
