i dont know about ice, but in roller, when you bake your skates, of course take your wheels off, but also don't use your skates for 24 hours after you bake them. baking will change the molecular structure of the frame until it's completely cooled (not just cool to the touch, but the chemical heat of the molecules must be released as well), and make the frame prone to cracking and even breaking. _________________ Because it hurts so good.

Wow... thanks? I'm a bit of a whore. But I didn't expect the compliment of actually telling someone to listen to what i have to say. lol.
Thanks! |

Don't get excited skippy...
Anyways, it's all about attitude. You have to want to do something like play net which isn't something a lot of people enjoy doing...sure every once and a while every one wants to try it (which works equally true in reverse...occasionally I like to play out) but it takes a unique mind to want to play goal all the time.
Now, it's just down to the physical requirements. Unlike forwards and defense, we play on the ice the full 60 (or whatever it is for roller) so you need to be able to stand on your feet...and still have energy. Like Cman was saying, if you miss even a week you will feel it. I think I about killed myself the first day back on the ice after my week and a half in Florida back in March.
Also, gear...I know it's tempting to just buy the cheapy 400 bucks for a full set gear to try it, but if you love it now, you know you'll love it...so I suggest finding a great deal on some pro or senior gear to avoid spending 2 or 3x as much replacing all your gear again...right now is a perfect time to do so because a lot of places are clearancing TPS gear and a lot of other stuff because you're hitting the "off-season" for hockey and last years models are clearing out too!
Style of play...slinky I want to kick you in the nutts...just because someone stays down doesn't mean they're physically inept. Jonas Hiller, Simeon Varlamov, Steve Mason, Nikolai Khabiboulin and on and on and on...they all butterfly and shuffle on the ice for the most part. Granted they get back up when the puck is moving away from them but it's not a bad shape thing, so much as a style of play thing. Big goalies take up big spaces, and since something like 60% of shots nowadays come in at the bottom of the net, get on your knees and spread em and keep in correct position. That's what I do a lot (which usually a lot of the old-timers at drop in b***h at me for because they don't fully understand our position) and it's always worked pretty well for me.
Also, if you're new and you're just looking for help...almost everyone on here has 5 years + of goaltending experience for better or worse. The only one I can think of that doesn't, definitely deserves the credit of putting 5 years of work into a years worth of time because he's just as sharp as most of us. Ask! Ask everything, anything you can think of just ask (please search first though) because we all LOVE goaltending and LOVE helping others get into it. We're like Bill Clinton but instead of White House interns we're newbie predators...and instead of sexual favors we enjoy critiquing and helping. |

Whats wrong with those Marvel ITECH masks?
I want the Iron Man one, I really feel it would add a lot to my game.
Plus, this quote from Varlamov today I thought was brilliant
Do you ever feel nervous?
"Of course I get nervous. I am not an Iron Man, especially before games. You just have to deal with your emotions. But I do get nervous."
From Puck Daddy on Yahoo
I could be Iron Man, and never get nervous _________________ A goalie must have one overriding quality, he must want to be a goalie |

The Itech 1400's are very, very low end. Like Not for use with a puck low end.
I've read on forums that they're not very sturdy. That being said, since I can't skate, I'm only going to be playing dek hockey recreationally for a while.
I bit the bullet today and purchased my first set of pads. I had to go cheap because the fiance was dead set against "wasting" money on goalie equipment ("why couldn't I be happy just playing D")
So I got the Street RBK pads. I'll let people know when they come. I just could not pass up glove, blocker and pads for 148 bucks. If I ever learn to skate, I'll probably upgrade them.
As for my mask, I must admit that I caved into my vain side. I bought a marvel mask (the venom one). I figure I'll be able to journal my foray into cheap gear as a 28 year old fat guy.
It'll be fun.
Now to find Goalie pants that fit. That's my goal for this weekend. So far I spent 190 on the mask, and 150 on the pads and gloves. Need to get a c/a, some pants (maybe) and a stick. wish me luck.
ps. I also ordered the Pro-Hybrid Theory dvd. Since I know nothing about being a netminder I figured it'd be a new frame of reference for the DVD reviews. |

I'd offer to send you one of the million sticks I have lying around for only S/H... but considering they work with my 5'4" height, they'd probably be short on you |

As I play inline, with a much lighter puck, do you think it might be ok for me to wear?

If you're playing with dudes who can rip it 80+ mph, I'd stay away from it. A roller puck is lighter, but the plastic is harder. So when it actually hits you it creates a harder strike feeling. It's your head dude, stick with quality on that one. |

Damn. Its about right in my price range (i'm a student) and we don't exactly have the largest selection of gear here.

Heres a link to a page with masks on, if you've got a chance could you have a look? Maybe let me know what they are like if you know?

DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT BUY FROM THAT PLACE. All those prices are almost double their value.
If you want a decent mask for the price, NV7 can be bought for under $400. I'll even buy one and ship it to you. |

| Just as a note, I was knocked unconscious not once, but twice today. The first by a ripper from Nick Parillo and the second from an accidental collision involving some pro and a very obvious non-pro...I wear the Itech 1201 and despite every effort (throwing it into the pipes, off the boards, kicking it into a cement wall, throwing it 20+ feet down the hallway, and kicking it into a steel beam) to break the damn thing so it'd force me to stay off the ice until my new mask comes in, the thing is still fully intact without a scratch. Just for your sake, stay away from the 1200/1201 and 1400/1401 if you're not playing PeeWee hockey. |

I should note, I'm from New Zealand. So about double is right. And $500 for a helmet is a boatload here as far as I'm concerned.
I've looked at getting gear from goaliemonkey.com, but once you double the cost and add ~$300 at least for shipping it gets fairly expensive.
I know you should pay to protect your head but prices are rediculous, as you saw _________________ A goalie must have one overriding quality, he must want to be a goalie |

Can't be $300 to ship a 1 cubic foot 5 lb box from Canada to New Zealand. |

So... you'd rather skimp out on a couple hundred dollars, and risk having permanent brain damage from pucks/bodies/sticks and other miscellaneous objects hitting your head?
dude, I understand the lack of money... but this is your HEAD. If your brain gets damaged, you'll have wished you paid the extra money. There's nothing more worth it. A shot to a cheap chest protector? A bruise, maybe a cracked rib. Nothing too life threatening.
Seriously think about this. I'd hate to see a goalie end their career (even a houseleague one) because of a cheap helmet. |

I have no idea how much it would cost to ship for just a helmet, I asked for catcher and blocker too. I'm talking always in NZD though. I'll try find out actual prices if you would be awesome enough to buy one.
@Puckstopper- If I wasn't worried about how I protected myself I already would have bought one, hence why I asked when it got brought up. I saw a guy get concussed last year when he turned his head to the shot and got caught in the temple. I don't want me any of that _________________ A goalie must have one overriding quality, he must want to be a goalie |
