| hello everyone again. I was reading the topic about vitamins and it included some dieting tips. Just wondering what are some good foods to eat game day and during the week before game day. I usually have my games fridays and/or sundays and I feel tired mentally during games. Reading the vitamin topic i think i should be taking pills for iron, beta carotene, vitamin C and E, and Protein. what foods will provide these? thanks |

| i got cut off because the teacher yelled at me haha. ok so what are some food i should eat the night before game day or on game day and what are some good things to eat during the week to keep up with everything. or should i just go with pills? |

I drink Vitamin Water and Diet Coke Plus and they have a lot of vitamins, but I don't really know the imprtance of carefully paying attention to the vitamins in your body before games. But some foods that you might have on a regular basis that have those vitamins in it are:
Iron: Spinach, Broccoli, leans meats, nuts, chicken, turkey, and more...
Beta Carotene: Broccoli, Spinach, Carrots, Sweet potato...those are the only I know of
Vitamin C: Mainly eat raw fruits, such as apples and oranges, bananas and blackberries, etc. Cranberry juice, orange juice, and apple juice has a lot.
Vitamin E: I just take a vitiman E vitamin, because it mostly comes in fish and I don't eat any fish. It comes in cheese and yogurt, but I'm not sure which kinds.
Protein: This is everywhere. In most meats, dark green vegetable, etc..
But before you games you need to be hydrated and rested. Carbs are also very important. You should probably eat something light the night before like just spaghetti or bagels.
I've never noticed any effects on the night before a game meal, so I don't pay much attention to what I eat the night before. I just don't eat too much that night so I feel alright in the morning.
Even though I hate breakfast and rarely eat it, I do on game days. Usually an english muffin and apple or orange juice. Then for lunch I have a bagel and pretzels, w/ chocolate milk. And then before the game, usually spaghetti and chicken. But be careful if your game is right after school or work and you don't really more than an 2 hours before the game, just don't have dinner before. I would reccomend a snack before the game (very small) and then eat after. You should only be having dinner if you have 3 to 4 hours before the game, because that is when it will actually be able to be used as energy. If you eat an hour before the game you're going to feel heavy and slow, possibly a little weak kneed.
And hydration with water is equally important. I have noticed the difference between being hydrated and not. When I run, on days I eat right and drinks tons of water, I can run probably an extra mile, and feel good. When I don't, I get hot and tired after the second mile. So it really does help.
Drink the water evenly throughout the day, and maybe a little more 45 minutes to a half hour before the game so you can get the full effects of it while you're playing. _________________

Do you know how bad Vitamin Water is for you? Go check out the label. 45-50 calories per serving, but each bottle has 3/4 servings. That's about as bad as regular soda.
Carbs are heavy foods, I don't suggest eating them right before your game. They take a while to digest and before that, they just sit in your stomach doing nothing. 4 or 5 hours should be a good time to eat them if you have to, but the best time is the night before.
Eat lots of vegetables, some fish, chicken, and fruits. Ease up on carbs, they aren't as good as people make them out to be. You still need some but don't over-do it (can lead to diabetes later), and cut out sodas if you can.
After games or workouts, light yogurt is a good quick fix; and anything with protein is great (you have about a 45 minute window to consume protein so your body can use it to produce muscle), again make sure not to over do it. One of the guys I skate with used to play in the ECHL, and he's pretty into this health/fitness stuff. He's always got a powdered mixture in one of those plastic shaker cups so he can down it right after our skates.
As for feeling tired during games, try taking a 20-30 minute nap a few hours before the game. I would think that on Fridays, you are a little tired from school or work. On Sundays, try going for a workout in the morning and coming home for a nap. I am willing to bet you are tired for your weekend games because you haven't done a thing all day. |

i know it's really small in the scope of things, but i've been drinking the G2 gatorade mixed with water and it's been pretty good as far as hydration is concerned. Seems like you get the good stuff of the gatorade without the high numbers of the stuff you don't want sometimes. _________________ Itech 4.8 Profile C/A

Good posts on here. The main thing, as has already been covered, is hydration. Make sure you get enough liquid before and during the game. I generally eat some kind of pasta a couple hours before the game and have an energy drink of some kind on the way to the game.
I've also found that 10-15 minutes on a stationary bike or a treadmill before putting the gear on loosens and warms up the muscles and gets me ready for the game. _________________

i just want to correct 1 thing
chicken is not a great source of iron, its mainly found in high concentrations in red meats, and leafy green vegetables
they also have pretty cheap iron supplements _________________

No, caffeine hurts re-hydration. Caffeine is a diuretic, so Gatorade would be highly unlikely to have it, especially for a drink made to hydrate athletes and prides itself on being a better source than water. In my opinion, water is better when you don't need to hydrate quickly. _________________

I drink Gatorade after games and practices, and I drink water throughout the games and practices. In believe Gatorade should wait until after the events, not between or during.
But you can't really go against Gatorade, it's widely used and popular, pro athletes everywhere use it, and they do a lot of tests to prove the products effectiveness, plus it does seem to help when you do drink it.
During meals I do drink diet soda, Crystal Light, water, and chocolate milk. I try not to drink soda, but it's hard to stop. _________________

i mostly drink arnold palmers (half iced tea-half lemonade) and i make the lemonade myself by squeezing lemons so i get something thats both low on calories and tasty. i have water during games, with a little gatorade before hand, and some afterwards. _________________
