Well it has been about 2 months since my concussion. Yesterday I went with a buddy to take his dog's to the park. I ran a couple times close to full sprint with the dogs. Not running more than 100 feet at a time. My headaches came back. With tryouts 2-3 weeks away I am having to face the realization that I most likely will not be able to play this season.
This is the second time I have had the game taken away from me due to injury. I had a knee injury during a game my senior year of high school and didn't play for 4 years following. At the age of 25, I am starting to think that I am just not meant to play competitive (non-rec) hockey. I have never been so depressed. I've slept all day and all I want to do right now is go back to bed. |

You still have a few weeks, don't lose hope yet. And also, I'm not a doctor but what would happen if you just sucked it up and tried your best on tryout day? _________________ That's what she said!

| I guess that is something I could ask a doctor. The way my head felt after running a short distance, I'm afraid hockey would make my head explode. |

I know your going to hate hearing this, but head injuries have ended many athletes dreams. That is why they have rules in yourh - hs that if you sustain 3, your no longer able to play, not just because your more likely to get another, but because its not safe for your any more. There are many ways to still be competitive you just have to be willing to explore them. coaching certification for USA hockey is going on at many many rinks right now, and those kids in ip and house leagues need good coaches. You could start there, and then work in to a travel team etc....
the upside is that you do still have time between now and tryouts. You could well still make the team. No matter what this need only be nothing more than a change in direction, not an end. |

| I do hate hearing it, but I have to keep that in the back of my mind. I have given coaching some consideration. I would like to open my own goaltending school/camp eventually. I think I might look into some of the programs at some of the rinks I play at. Does USA Hockey train for all around coaching jobs or do they have programs for goaltending specific coaches? |

in all honesty, USA hockey coaching clinics and all the stuff i have seen put out by them seems to be designed for people who know nothing about hockey.
I believe this is why house leagues goalies realy suffer as they get little to no special attention. this is suposed to be chaning but I have not seen it yet. At the same time we must remember that goalies are way out numered by players so familurity of what goalies do is often not as high...and all hear the stereotypical advice....
anyway, the kids can use you! |

I believe USA Hockey trains you as an all around. You go by levels and go to seminars and stuff like that. In a lot of cases, the coach doesn't even get paid even for coaching the highest level (Tier I). I've noticed about goalie coaches, that most of them have played at high levels and are now getting into coach. There might be some goalie coaching seminars...But I would really doubt it. _________________

So I found out tryouts are in mid Sept giving me some hope of making a recovery. I still have time to prepare. I have been rollerblading and doing light workouts at home. My head still bothers me a little bit after but it hasn't been nearly as bad.
I'm going to try running again this weekend and see how my head feels. If I can do that, then I am going to step into a pickup game for 5-10 minutes or longer depending on how I feel. If all goes well, I will hopefully be able to attend a quick clinic to get my game legs ready before tryouts.
I am going to make it through this! |
